Don't choose Tiscali, they are slower and less reliable than any of the others, even if they are cheaper. BT has the widest coverage, service has been at 100% for me since I got it last year. Telewest isn't bad, but to get the best deal with them you have to take their phone and ISP package as well.
I've heard Tiscali is ok if you have a BT line. We've got Telewest cable so I'm thinking about going on broadband which they do for £16.99 a month. The 1mb connection is a bit more expensive. Aren't BT advertising a connection for around the same price?
Cheers peeps - I will check out a few to see what's the best, hopefully we'll get a few more people putting in their two pence worth![]()
I use Demon, not the cheapest (£24.99) but I've never had cause for complaint. They were offering free set-up and free ADSL modem, not sure if this is still the case.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ has some good info.
Shug, have a look at Virgin.net straightforward and no contract! 25quid a month, with none of this tied into a 1 year contract bollox
Will do, and cheers to Clive as well - I had a good look at that site.
We got a phone line put in yesterday - I will send the number out to a few of you, the only fucker is that the "old" line upstairs doesnae fucking work!
Does this mean I will have to pay an extra charge to get a new line fitted upstairs?
As ever I am hopeless with Technology![]()
If you go with Blueyonder it doesn't use your phone line so you can be online and still recieve calls. Not sure you can with the phone based ones. The £16.99 package is pretty cheap considering it's five times faster than dail up. I've got their 750k package, that's £25.00ish. but 250k should be like a whirl-wind compared to dial up.
Have they got broadband capability in Corby then ? I thought it was all Tennents Super tins joined together by pieces of string !
You can use ya phone at the same time as surfing with all DSL connections, thats the point. It uses a different frequency on ya phoneline cables so it dont interfere.
Beware of cheap packages tho Shug, ya normally tied into a contract and then they are liable to go bump up the price after 3months or so ![]()
ive just changed my bb connection from eclipse to bulldog.
bulldog are the cheapest in the uk,per mbit.
i got 2 mbit 24/7 on a 40:1 line contention ratio for 24.99pm not bad seeing most isp charge about that for 512k.
er no i dont work for bulldog
just thought id pass the info along.(oooh and no d/load limit either).
I use the Irish Government... doubt you lot can get that though :-)
Pipex are meant to be one of the best; last time I lived in the UK (1998) I used their dialin anyway...

Can you browse via internet explorer with your AOL connection? I know I used to be able to but that was a few years ago. It could at least give you an idea if that is where your problem lies.
Don't forget to check out if there is a download limit per month, that is usual with the low cost deals from the big name providers.
Spone,
When Excite@Home when tits up the cable in our city was cut until mediacom reset it two days later. In the meantime i stuck the AOL disc in to get internet for the time being. That disc totally fooked my pc. I had to reinstal windows to get cable to work again.
Perhaps you need to reformat your hard drive to delete AOL and get broadband working.
Sure it sucks but nothing beats a fresh HD.
Once you've got your HD sorted out, I suggest you give Pipex a go. £23 a month, no limits on your DL amount, easy enough to set up and very reliable.
AOL is a fooking virus. Takes over your pc, pretty damn impossible to totally remove without a reformat.

I don't understand why broadband is so expensive in Europe. Here, we have 4mb cable broadband for cnd 37$ wich would be around 15 pounds
