Who else has been invited to a free account? 1 GB is awesome.

Ages ago. Its useful when you get 5MB of legitimate mail a week like I do - opensource programming = lots of high traffic mailing lists; and then theres the BHAFC ones as well.

I don't get much e-mail, but it should be handy when I need to e-mail large attachments to friends.

even with that 1 gig, you are still limited to a 10mb attachment...it's good for archiving loads of old messages though!

I got mine just now. Really impressive. I like it!

These google lads have the net stiched up. Fair play to them.

I have not been invited even if I registered for it months ago  Anyway, Yahoo has also been vastly increased. Nevertheless I will open one with Gmail as son as they seem fit to invite me.

Err, Google don't invite you. Other users have to invite you. Signing up for it only means Google will let you join a day or two before it goes generally public

and if anybody else is interested in an account with google, I have some invites as well...

shoot me an e-mail at thieveslikeus@gmail.com

Nic - yes, just confirm no-one else has invited you yet - don't want to invite them

The Google mailing list has given out a grand total of No invites, they all come off other users.

Go ot your Gmail account, look on the left side, under the green labels box there should be something in dark red that says 'Invite 6 friends to Gmail', select it, then send an invite to a friend.

When I first tried to check for the invite thing I could not find it, but when I first tried to compose mail, it then appeared on the left at the bottom of the menu choices.

Finally appeared.

As I registered 2 accounts :evil4:, I'll have plenty to send if some people are in need ;)

to those that have asked for an invite...it shows that I have 6 available (and that's how many have asked for one!), but for some reason it won't let me send them out...I will be at another computer this weekend, so I shall try it from there...sorry for the delay...not the first time I've had problems on this computer...I'm about to chunk it out the window!!!

The only reason you get 1 gig is because the people at Google can read all the emails you have sent and emails in your inbox. I can't believe no one has mentioned this. so if you don't mind people invading your privacy by reading all the emails you send and recieve go ahead and sign up.

This is why i'm not signing up for this shit.

It's not as if Google's hired an army of people to spy on everyone's e-mails, but Google's e-mail system computers scan your messages in order to put relevant google ads on the right hand part of your screen. You must be truly naive to think Google has actual people reading your messages.

You must be very very naive if you don't believe that whomever is providing your email right now has the right and ability to read your email...even if they aren't I can guarantee you that your government has access to their mail system. Either that or you work for Microsoft or Yahoo.

You have a point. I was on ziplip, which was a "secure" provider - even had the https thing going on. Then I realised that matters diddly squat to anyone who really wanted to read my email, and ziplip was very very slow, and just 2.5mb.

If anyone really wants to read your email, they proberbally can. if the state decide to, they will. Chances are, they wont be bothered, and if they could be bothered, you should really be more careful with how you communicate :evil4:

Google screen for certain words to place ads in the corner of the page. Talking about a certain film with a mate? then they will offer to sell it to you, or amazon will. This beats spam or small inboxes anyhow. As far as im aware, the US governmnet uses similar screening technologies, which proberbally "read" passively this site too. On Mayday in 98 i think, there was a campaign to shut down cia servers for a few days - which basically involved everyone who had the inclination to, writing "communist, terrorist, etc" at the bottom of an email - it worked too.

So : if you want to express your heartfelt meaning toward a girl, or bring down the state, or - preferbaly - both, dont email.

If you want to email your friend on holiday, or organise a get together - use GMAIL, or EMAIL - theres not a big "security" difference between the 2

Hotmail can do that too

As can your ISP

Or the NSA

If you want to be paranoid, be paranoid for a good reason, not a shitty one like "they're targeting ads at me". They do that on your web searches already ffs.

Oh, just noticed you live in the UK. That means the UK is already scanning all the mail you send and receive if sent/received by POP/STMP/IMAP4 anyway. So surely having your mail on servers in Ireland and having it digitally scanned for use for advertising is better than having it on servers in Cumbria and being scanned for terrorism?

Thanks Nick. Looks like they've dispensed with the "invite 6 people" option now though, it isn't present this morning.

Send and receive mail, that seems to have enabled it for me...

Its not a permanent option. You only get given a finite amount of invites every few days (or weeks as it has been sometimes).

Also you get none if you don't use the account.

Don't you have to be invited to join Orkut as well.

Yes but each Orkut user has unlimited invites

Orkut is blocked by the proxy here but when I'm back onto a dialup I can invite anyone here.
