Well, if there is aussie music thread, we must have a canadian music thread as well.

You'd be amazed how many bands people might consider actually american, and they are not ;)

Or of course bands that have a canadian member, does that count?

Sure, you have some we're not proud of, and you have a full list of bands you people will never be aware of (except one, of course) that sings in french.

But it seems most artists that "makes it" out of Canada are considered as lame by most people, so let's see if people find some that are not so much?

I'll name one... well, two... Moist (plus solo work by their lead singer David Usher) and Our Lady Peace... two canadian bands that, according to me, do very good music that is really good.

(Favorites being Underground by Moist and Clumsy by Our Lady Peace)

OK, how about Neil Young? Yeah, Neil Young's a good one.

But Our Lady Peace? Meh...I saw them. BORING. Besides, the singer sounds like an even whinier Billy Corgan.

ISTR around the time Fine Time came out that there was a very NO sounding band with a single in the UK charts that came from canada.

Could be wrong, it was a long time ago!

The only Canadian band I can think of off-hand is Martha and the Muffins (is Martha Ladly from that band the M Ladly who did the cover art for the FACTUS 81-82 EP?).

But on the subject of Canandian music generally, there was a program on the World Service recently about nations (like Canada, South Africa, and needless to say, France)with quota systems for domestic media, insisting on a proportion of locally produced music getting airtime. What I found interesting was the claim that such quotas actually work, producing a thriving music scene where before was wall-to-wall Madonna and Jackson. Its interesting because at first thought one would have expected the old 'invisible hand' of the market to provide what people want, yet it sounds like there was an audience for local stuff in these countries which wasn't being served until the state intervened.

Anyway, I'm curious, does this system have a noticable effect in Canada? which I think was one of the countries mentioned.

Am I the only idiot who listens to Treble Charger and 54/40? (Yeah for the Tea Party and Matt Goode!) On second thought, don't answer the previous rhetorical question as it may damage my fragile self-esteem.
