XP Service Pack 2 :nonono:

I downloaded the XP SP 2 (7ty-something MB). It installs a security center and a firewall.

The damn thing disabled my NAV auto-protect (I have the System Works). And I just can't activate now

Yep, seems Microsoft screwed something in my NAV.

Did it happen to someone else?

I uninstalled the service crap. NAV was not working correctly, and Kazaa was desconnecting and not connecting anymore.

I still can't believe Microsoft can make such a fuck... poor job like this.

I was getting a wmiprvse.exe error message at logon. By stopping the WMI service in msconfig this stops the error message from appearing. I've been told also it can affect Nero but they've released a fix for this apparently.

Had SP2 for about 4 months and never had a problem.

NAV is complete SHITE and has always had issues with windows...duh!! Get a real AV program that works and get on with your life!!

This is merely a firewall setting. YAYAYAAA!! Your firewall actually works! You should be happy! Now go push the advanced settings button and move forward. Amen.

PS - Norton had been about a year behind MS in product compatability...NOT visa versa. Don't blame MS for moving forward in this world...blame Norton for charging too much for a PIECE OF SHITE suite of bloated, system hogging programs that are easily replaced by better, FREE programs.

You'll find that MANY of the services that are running by default can be switched off. And in fact, if you are a regular home user, it is recommended that you shut most of these holdover services down. Many of them are carryovers from the core NT days and are there to run your 'puter as a server or actualy workstation on a large LAN.

Ditch Norton and get Grisoft AVG 6. Works like a charm with SP2, updated almost daily and it's FREE.

The XP firewall does come in for some criticism, mainly because it doesn't block outgoing traffic. Still, it's very easy to disable it and use a third party one like ZoneAlarm. Which is FREE.

Just FYI...there is an entire web site dedicated to this subject. I can't recall the URL off my head but a GOOGLE search should give up some good results.

Do not install SP2 for XP if you don't have to. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Most on here are right, it enables the highest security settings on your computer. You will spend hours researching which ones you have to disable to get your computer back to the way it was. Good luck with the updates.

A quick question re. AVG: I've downloaded it but when I try to install I get an error message, 'error installing iKernel.exe (0x10000)'.

Anyone know what's causing this? Anything to do with Norton perhaps?

Well I dunno about that! Sure if it ain't broke, don't fix it but there is no compelling reason to NOT upgrade to SP2. As for the security settings...IF you are still running a 486DX4 or some shite like tha it may take you hours to return to normal but for the most part, returning to maost users default/preferred settings is a 15 minute process at most folks. There are just too many resources on the web and in print to even think about the excuse that it jumbles your settings and reconfiguiring is too time consuming. As with ANYTHING you do to your computer...there are always risks, system changes and bugs...whether it be a vidy card upgrade or installing a service pack. So so your research FIRST, THEN upgrade, install or whatever. No excuse not to! If you research and install properly as various sites and knowledge bases tell you exactly how to...the process will be virtually transparent to you and your 'puter.

I reccommend you double check your registry with a good regclean program (avail for free on the web) to ensure all hints of thatdarn Norton scurge is clear from your system.

The problem with Kazaa Lite is not "to connect". The firewall asked if I wanted to allow Kazaa to work, and I said yes. The problem is that Kazaa Lite automatically disconnect sometimes to reconnect and refresh the connected users. Well, even with the firewall allowing Kazaa Lite to work, when it got disconnected it woudnt reconnect again! So, it's a BUG, not a setting issue.

The Norton Auto-protect had been automatically disabled when I installed the SP2. I just couldnt activate again. And come on, NORTON'S AUTO-PROTECT WORKS LARGELY BETTER THAN THIS CRAP WINDOWS FIREWALL.

Maybe it happens only with portuguese version

And AVG 6 is better than NAV????

So uninstall SP2 then, if it offends you that much...

Yes, there are resources to tell you how to reclaim your security settings. But why go through the trouble if you are already running an anti-virus/firewall? Microsoft doesn't provide the best anti-virus/firewall applications available, just helpfull tools to prevent most, not all, invasions. They have other things to worry about, like constantly fixing problems from previous versions of anything they sell. It's a matter of opinion on what actions to take. Please take caution with whatever decision you make.

This is not entirely true. The majority of the services are for the local computer. Many of the service you are referring to are add-ons or hidden until activated(installed using i386 on your OS install CD).

Thanks for the advice. Binned Norton, but still got the same error message with AVG. Re-installed Norton for now, better than nothing.

If you have a wireless lan then it adds some bits and pieces that may or may not be of use.

Reinstalled. Seems the Norton issue is solved - maybe a problem of WMI update...

But the Kazaa bug is still there. I'll unistall again and wait for an upcoming solution about this. I can't live without Kazaa

I found out a brazilian forum about SP2... 800 threads with uncountable number of compability problems, from games and joysticks to "I cant start my PC" and "I can't shut down Windows"

This is what I was referring to. It always best to check before you install a service pack to insure you keep your computers integrity.

Just some info in case anyone else has the same problem installing AVG. Disable System Restore before installing & it works perfectly. AVG is now taking care of things and Norton's gone down the PC equivalent of the u-bend.

Been using BeOS R5 SP3 for near on 4 years now with no problems :)

SP2 brought my brothers laptops CPU down to 233Mhz, had to partially uninstall it to get it back to 2.6Ghz (WINDOWS SP2, not BeOS R5 SP2)
