John cooper clarke: does anybody know something about this band where stephen morris played the drums in 1979. I love the track gimmix. Anything else?

John Cooper Clarke is a poet not a band. He was on the Short Circuit 10" and is still going.

Saw him several times, have a reat mixing desk recording from Glastonbury 1981.

Love the "Short Circuit" e.p. "I Married A Monster From Outer Space" and "You Never See A Nipple In The Daily Express" are genius. Lived with Nico, until she died when she fell off her bike! Did release a single produced by Martin Hannett on Factory, forgotten what it was called, check the Factory dicography for info.

Love that one Mike, the twin grooved single, with two versions, the original take and one with sound effects over certain words, was a big hit round our way when it came out, my roommate dedicated it to his ex-girlfriend.

The Day My Pad Went Mad, from one of those Rough Trade/NME cassettes with an introduction by one "Sheena Easton" , was another fave, as was Health Fanatic.

I forgot about "Ten Years In An Opened Neck Shirt".

John Cooper Clarke = bloody genius... though seeing pictures of him recently I was under the assumption that Bob Dylan, Howard Marks, Max Wall and Robert Smith had all amalgamated to create a particularly unsightly whole.

Don't think he produced anything for Factory but he did loads of stuff with Martin Hannett over the years. The song allegedly featuring Steve Morris was 'Gimmix' which was released on a triangular(!) shaped single - but I don't think it's ever been confirmed that Steve played on it...it's another 'fact' from Mark Johnson. It was re-released a little while ago on the rather excellent JCC compilation cd 'Word of Mouth' which is more than worth a tenner of anybody's money (or however much it costs in your respective countries). JCC very kindly shared his spliff with me at the Swan and Sugar Loaf in Croydon so he's a hero in my book!

No mention whatsoever of Steve playing drums on this. How was the spliff Phil?

It was stronger than I'm used to! He remarked that if we'd been in Amsterdam we could've smoked it in comfort but as we were in Croydon we had to act like social lepers and smoke it in the lavatories!

Ain't that the way it is mate. Did you manage to have a decent conversation with him, or did the joint make you ga-ga?

He was very talkative ,though he was also worried about whether he'd done his hair right! He was looking for a mirror but that was something of a forlorn hope in the toilets of the Swan and Sugar Loaf which definitely comes under the heading of 'dive'. He was wearing a very strange jacket that he called his 'This Island Earth Jacket' as it resembled the those worn in that hokey old 50s b-movie..."Someday all jackets will be made this way" he said in the style of that old Seiko watch ad. We also had a little chat about current favourite television programmes - he was a big fan of many American comedy series, especially Seinfeld and another that I can't remember the name of but took the format of a spoof Jerry Springer type show.
