That will only happen if George Bush appoints the next few Supreme Court justices. If he's not in office, he can't make those appointments.

Well Bush will be prez and I hope Ruth Bader doesn't die (that statement made me gag).
O'Connor is the vote keeping Roe in place. She wants to retire. If Bush appoints her replacement, he will appoint another Scalia; he's said so. That swings the court against Roe.

No matter who a president appoints, that person may take on very different views when being a justice. My belief is that the court will refuse to hear any further cases in the near future, because the courts are still stuck in a phase of aggrandizing state rights. The civil rights era of the supreme court is dead and will be unless a true crisis erupts. The court will ignore Falwell, etc.

Bush is on record as saying that his Supreme Court appointments will be in the mold of Scalia. It's an open secret that if Rehnquist retires during Bush's second term, which he wants to do, Scalia will be the next Chief Justice. O'Connor also wants to retire during Bush's second term.
While it is possible that a Justice may decide cases differently than the appointing President would have liked, expecting that that will be the outcome of Bush's judicial appointments indicates a denial of reality.
Scalia replacing Rehnquist will really have no effect. I hope O'Connor stays because she is a good justice. Anyways Bush will never be allowed by Congress to bring an over the top Scalia type guy in this day and age.
And which party runs Congress?

The Repubs control the House, and the Senate is even steven. After this election, I think both cam.s will sway a little to the left.

Funny though, it seems like if it's Canada or USA, the geographical situation is the same everywhere.
Western Canada is conservative (like Republicans) while the East is Liberal (like Democrats)
Ah well, I still wonder why it seems that the only people on 6 billions people on the earth think George W. Bush is not an idiot are the Republicans though :p
I'd prefer Arnold over him

The majority of the Pacific west is liberal. California is strongly Democratic, but there are pockets of conservatism here and there (SD is much more conservative than LA and the Bay Area). Oregon is in the middle, and Washington is liberal. The rest of the West is either to the right or in the middle. The Northeast is liberal, the South is to the right, and the Midwest is in the middle but sways to the right. Anyway nearly all of the 6 billion people of this world aren't versed well enough in American politics to even be allowed to have an opinion who would serve the US best.

Whitewater, bombing the Chinese embassy, going to a practically useless war in Kosovo, having an ugly daughter, ineffective bombing in Iraq, not doing anything effective to halt Al Qaeda ever sine 1993, riding the growing economy of Papa Bush (look at the charts of the last year of the Bush presidency), letting millions die in Rwanda (the very Democratic thing to do), failing to get a handle on the uncontrolled surging economy of the tech boom (which hence led to a precipitous drop in 2000-2001). Clinton in eight years did nothing except for look good and ride a tech-driven economy. Gennifer, Paula, Monica... Mambo Number 5!

All speculation right now, but if Bush is re-elected and a middle or leftist judge steps down, then many people fear that Bush will appoint a pro-life judge, and this will spark a movement to overrule Roe v. Wade.

Useless war in Kosovo?
I'm sorry there, but it's NATO that did the war in Kosovo to stop the Albanian genocid... if that isn't a good reason, I'd love to hear your reasons for invading Iraq... unless you think it's only the USA that went to Kosovo, I'd love to remind you that it's all countries members of Nato, Canada included!
I'd love to hear why Bush didn't try something in Sudan lately... Apparently, when there is no financial interest for the US, they don't do a thing...

Well, hum, actually they investigated the fact that Clinton really LIED when he said he never had sex with that woman.
If he's not considering oral sex as sex... I don't know what it is...
I wouldn't feel that confident with somebody that lies to my face like that.. but we had a pretty worst case in Canada, where our prime minister gave contracts of sponsorships to "friends of the party" and they had 10% comissions, 2M$ for doing a phone call and stuff like that...

Well, as they say here now, nobody died when Clinton lied.
I think it's rather despicable that Clinton cheated on his wife. And let's be clear; getting a BJ was cheating. That said, is there anybody in this forum who would go on national television and humiliate their spouse and children by admitting to an illicit affair? It's one thing to admit to your spouse that you cheated; it's another thing entirely to do it on national television. It's not so much that it's humiliating to the cheater; it's that it's humiliating to his family. And that was the Republican objective-- to force Clinton into making a choice between humiliating his family, or perjuring himself and lying on national TV. I think given the circumstances, he did the right thing in sparing his wife and daughter the humiliation.

Casualty figures for the Rwandan genocide range from 500,000 to 800,000; add another 200,000 deaths in Burundi since 1993, and you have anywhere from 700,000 to 1 million casualties. Britannica.
The Yugoslav wars—four of them—resulted 200,000 casualties, and 2.5 million refugees. Encarta. ERIC Clearinghouse. There were nearly 1.7 million Kosovars in 1999. Fact-Index.
Was it wrong to step in before 1.7 million Kosovars were killed or displaced? Does the fact that we did nothing in Rwanda invalidate later attempts to prevent genocide? Should we therefore stay out of Darfur, because we did nothing in Rwanda? Should we have gone to Rwanda, but not to Kosovo? Or should we do nothing whenever genocide rears its ugly head?
Your comparison of respective casualties raises a lot of unanswered questions, including why the Republican leadership became fixated on a BJ when other, perhaps more important things were happening in the world…
When I talk about Kosovo, I'm mentioning the reasoning we used to go and fight the Serbs in support of Kosovars. We thought a genocide of the Albanians was happening, and where a few thousands (actually closer to 1500 in 1998) died.
When I talked about Rwanda, I used that country's name to define the entire area in which about a million died in 1994 (and many more died before the escalation in 1994).
Originally posted by Tristan When I talk about Kosovo, I'm mentioning the reasoning we used to go and fight the Serbs in support of Kosovars. We thought a genocide of the Albanians was happening, and where a few thousands (actually closer to 1500 in 1998) died.
"The war caused inflicted many casualties. Yugoslavia claimed that NATO attacks caused between 1,200 and 5,700 civilian casualties. Human Rights Watch claims a total of only 500 civilian deaths occurred in 90 separate incidents. NATO acknowledged killing at most 1,500 civilians. The majority of deaths appear to have been within Kosovo itself; there were up to 5,000 military casualties according to NATO estimates, while the Serbian figure is around 1,000. Large numbers of Albanian civilians were also killed, although the exact numbers are unclear. Early predictions of hundreds of thousands of deaths proved untrue, but in the months after the war some 4,500 mostly Albanian bodies were dug up around Kosovo. Some mass graves were also found in Serbia itself, on Yugoslav military bases or dumped in the Danube. The total number of Albanian dead is generally believed to be around 10,000, although the true figure is unlikely ever to be knwn as some of the largest mass graves were cleared before the war's end in an apparent effort to obliterate potential war crimes evidence. The International Red Cross compiled a list of over 3,000 missing Albanians. Most of them turned out to be prisoners transfered to Serbia, and have been released, although some 1,000 are reported to still be in Serbia today. Around 1,500 Serbian civilians were reported missing, believed dead." Fact-Index.
In hindsight, it's easy to use the relatively low casualties to dismiss the decision to step in. But in 1999, the world didn't have the advantage of hindsight; the world did know that Milosevic had already fought three separate wars in that decade; the world knew that casualties were already in the hundreds of thousands, and refugees were in the millions; the world knew that there were 1.7 million Kosovars in Milosevic's sights. The total casualties of Milosevic's wars, including Kosovo, were about 200,000, with 2.5 million refgees.
So at what point would it have been right to stop Milosevic? Before another genocidal war, or after?
When I talked about Rwanda, I used that country's name to define the entire area in which about a million died in 1994 (and many more died before the escalation in 1994).
The total number dead for Rwanda and Burundi is about 1 million....and you still haven't addressed the unanswered questions in your comparison between the two conflicts...
I'm saying that it would've been a better use of our time to act in Rwanda than in Kosovo, where we in effect assisted the KLA (who attempted to invade Macedonia shortly after our action in Kosovo. Our entire action in all of the Yugoslav wars was suspect (the Croat leader was just as much of a cunt as Slobodan).
IMO Milosevic's actions are comparable to the Israelis (with the Palestinians) and the Russians (with the Chechens). Our action against Serbia was suspect, for if we were so damn concerned with such conflicts, then we could have sent troops to Israel. Milosevic was dealing with a dissenting minority concentrated in one part of his country, and the Albanians were notorious for terrorist actions. We entered a war in which both sides were dirty. We did not have to take action. We wholeheartedly believed the stories of hundreds of thousands dead in mass graves, but that never came to fruition.

Clinton was one of the primary reasons why I first started to lean to the right, that and my economics teacher in 11th grade.
I've not bothered to watch Fahrenheit 9/11 because of Moore's history of lying in his docu... mockumentaries. I'm sure there are good explanations for nearly all of Moore's points in his film. Anyways, it doesn't matter what 80% of the world think about this election, the American people need to elect the person who they believe will serve them best, and right now it's a dead heat (but I think Bush does have the edge now in the battleground states and could very easily win the electoral college again without winning the popular vote).

The religious right does sicken me, but I don't truly believe they are the ones who have the most control in the Bush White House. Hopefully Bush can get elected and then get shot so Cheney could be president along with Colin Powell as VP.
My problem with the Democrats is that their policy ventures have consistently contradicted themselves and plain do not make sense to me in the long run. The Republicans have their own problems that cannot be ignored, but they hail in comparison to Democratic policy IMO.
Dick Cheney is a very dangerous man (so is Donald Rumsfeld). You're nuts to want him as president.
Mark my words: if Bush is reelected, the United States will start to lose their most precious allies, and I am counting CANADA among them... yes!!! What will you do when Canada, France and mostly Europe, including the U.K. once Blair moves to his new house, plus every oriental country minus maybe Japan will turn against you? Do you think the United States are so overwhelming that they can dictate their views to the entire world no matter what? Do you really think that 9/11 was something big comparing to what might happen in the future if you've got the whole world against you?
There is a steep price for being arrogant.
History has taught that if you do not learn its lessons, you will eventually pay for it. 9/11 should have been a huge lesson for the United States -- because of their way of dealing with things and dealing with the world: in an arrogant way. The polls are showing right now that no lesson has been learned by half of the american people. That is a very serious matter and, to me, it shows either how ignorant or how arrogant half of that country is.
VOTE KERRY BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE !!!!!!!!!!! AVOID THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE !!!!!!!!!!
Tris, Cheney is president already...didn't you know that? ![]()
The religious right to me should just drop the whole "Christian" label because they give a bad name to real Christians. Jesus was a uniter, not a divider (slight pun at Dubya there), I don't think he or God gives a tinker's damn about whether someone's "liberal" or not. We were given the capacity of free will, and while we do have rules for society we should never surrender fully to the rule of law when our own common sense dictates differently. I hate the idea of "big government" telling us what to do, but what Bushies forget is the government is becoming more intrusive and bigger thanks to Bush. he's about the biggest "big government liberal" since FDR.
Anyway, America needs a change, we can't keep on this path that the Religious Right is trying to put us on. Our government is seperate from religion for a reason.

Unless the EU finally becomes a unified quasi-government (impossible because of each country's desire for sovereignty) or the Chinese economy grows astronomically (it's growing fast, but it would have to have an exponential increase upon its current growth), then under Bush we will not have a problem of facing another threatening superpower that could possibly topple the United States. How come the american administration DID NOT WAIT for the U.N. inspectors to finish their work before making a unilateral and illegal military intervention into the sovereign country of Irak ?

Well American officials have purposefully tried to weaken the dollar so that foreigners would choose to buy more and more American goods and that Americans would not buy so many foreign goods. Essentially American officials want to affect our atrocious trade balance.

Let's see...how long should Saddam have been given to allow the inspectors in to do their job? The initial cease fire was dated 3 April 1991, and by March of 2003, Saddam still had not allowed the inspectors full access that he had promised almost 12 years earlier? There were discrepancies in the amounts of weapons and agents supposedly produced and allegedly destroyed. Iraq, which kept meticulous records, can't find the paperwork that UNMOVIC needed to verify that all WMDs had actually been destroyed.
The first UN Inspection teams (UNSCOM) were ordered out by Saddam (uhm, wait a minute, he was the one that the cease fire kept in power, and the UN allows him to dictate these terms?) in 1999. The second group (UNMOVIC) does not gain access to Iraq until 2003. So hmmmm....doesn't take a long stretch of the imagination to think that Saddam might have stashed these somewhere, now does it?
The fact that the WORLD allowed this clown to constantly violate the terms of the cease fire and remain in power would only seem to let Saddam think that he could do what he wanted. So the United States (well, Dubya) and friends went in and did what the UN should have done when Saddam expelled the UNSCOM inspectors in 1999. Saddam may not have had anymore WMDs, once again, with almost 4 years to prepare for the return of inspectors, he could have them hidden in desert bunkers we might never find, so who knows. But the fact is, he WANTED more WMDs, and he constantly violated the terms of the cease fire.
And what is really funny, is I don't know why we all keep wasting our breath on this subject. I doubt that anyone is going to read what I write, and say, you know, Jeff's right.

That doesn't change the fact that by international law, any military intervention into a sovereign country needs the prior approval of the United Nations, which the United States did not have when they broke into the houses of dozens of innocents in Bagdad and humiliated the population there.
Don't get me wrong (I sound like Chrissie Hynde!) -- I'm as happy as anyone that Saddam is gone, but has the United States respected international law, they would have built an international coalition that would have made a much more efficient intervention in Irak -- because, as John Kerry often states, this intervention would have also had to prepare a plan for PEACE, what George W. Bush did not have, hence the current chaos.

That has strictly nothing to do with it! The « strength » of a currency is based on the strength of the economy of the country compared to the strength of the economy of another country. The trade balance is only one factor among many others who have influence on the value of a currency, although not a small one, I agree. It's not a secret for anyone that the U.S. economy has been virtually ongoing, thanks to that debt service. If nothing changes soon in your politics, your country is going to live the most serious economic depression since 1920 !>
Ooh the skies are falling, and this country will be destroyed! Nearly 2 million jobs created in the past year, and when energy prices begin to straighten out, then expect the economy to rebound even stronger, and then we will pay our debts.
Oh yes, JOB CREATION... all these unemployed young men and women who have been recruited to serve in the armed forces, they are part of the job creation... and they were all sent to Irak to get killed.
Great job W. ![]()
Your opinion yes...but a poor one that I, as a long standing member of the US Armed Forces, reject.
These people volunteered for that job knowing full well that this could and would happen. The war in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom long before that caused many to leave their homes and families behind to do just that! VOLUNTEER!
To think that one comes into the Armed Forces to merely get some $$ for college is just plain stoopid and if that is what they thought they were getting...then I've no sympathy for them.
What's the old saying..."You don't put on a condom unless you're gonna f@ck!" ? ![]()
GW didn't create the system by which millions of our young brothers and sisters enlist in the military by a long shot, so please don't presume to suggest that he has. Remember...these volunteers take an oath to a piece of paper, the Constitution, NOT to GW or any other person.
Jeff hit the nail on the head, how long should the UN give Saddam? Saddam destroyed the UN.
And by the way, who other than the US has question Sudan about their latest genocide? And who will intervene?

Exactly William, and that's also why some of them are getting screwed because, you know that better than anyone here, as a military, you will obey orders coming from your line of authority, the last one being of course the president in his quality of Commander in Chief. In this case, you are tied by Dubya's decisions, whatever your opinion about it.
Now in Irak's case, I've heard/read many comments from soldiers who were wondering why they were sent in Irak in the first place, how the people was misled, how the intervention was not well prepared, and how ugly it turned. In Fahrenheit 9/11, there's even one guy who decided not to go back to Irak, despite an order to do so, facing Court Martial, and who decided to go vocal about everything he saw while he was there. Not a nice picture, I'm telling you.
As a military, I guess you should be happy that your government is raising the military budget. But does that make the whole actions ok? I don't think so.
I'd be very curious to read your opinion about your troops being sent to Irak the way they were sent and the way the operations have been handled.
Also, knowing that you were in Japan for a while, is there any chance you might yourself be sent to Irak or Afghanistan anytime soon ?
What makes a person still believe Irak has/had WMD after all UN inspections and after all american research by themselves?
A lie defended till death as truth some moment convince weak minds - I can't remember who said this one. What maybe proves that Bush & CO are smarter then they appear to be; the fools are their followers...
PS: look at Saddam's arse, I think it's there!
Ahhh... and the kind of lie that depreciate the intelligence: if u don't believe them, they make u look idiot and anti-patriot...
Have you read Dr. Blix's reports to the UN?
Have you seen any of the reports on Saddam?
As I said in an earlier posts, no WMDs have been found, but Saddam's people could not come up with proof that they had destroyed ALL of the WMDs. That comes straight from Dr. Blix's reports.
I need to do some research, because I was a little young when it happened, but just what did the United Nations do when the Soviet Union rolled into Afghanistan? Did anything happen besides the west staying home from the Moscow Olympiad in 1980?

In Afghanistan the US helpd to arm the Mujahadin fighters who fought off the Soviets. these fundamentalist Islamic groups evolved into Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. But hell we turned the tide against the Soviets.
Jeff -- at that time, international law and international politics were nothing like they are today. Cold war was at its peak, nuclear proliferation was at its peak, and there were more dictators in the world than you could count them.
Since then, the Berlin wall has fallen, the Soviet Union crumbled, the regime in Moscow is much more democratic than it was and the country is no longer communist. As a matter of fact, I think only North Korea and Cuba still are today. Nikolaï Ceaucescu was killed and Romania is now looking into entering the European Community. That Community is now probably the second biggest change in the World after the fall of communism, since the first 15 countries all decided to use the same currency. A new economic and political force is now existing and it is lowly but surely counterbalancing the power of the United States.
So all of that being said, I don't think you can compare what is going on today with what has been done in the past. Quite the contrary actually -- we should remember the past in order not to make the same mistakes that were done in the past. So this is why the United Nations are so important.
Also, since then, the United Nations, as an organization, grew and got more power over time. The concept of the RULE OF LAW and of the HUMAN RIGHTS made incredible progress. The interventions made in Bosnia and in several africans country are a good example of that.
Sebsy, you make some valid points.
I've gone digging about, and the UN did NOTHING when the Soviet Union rolled into Afghanistan. Well, that might not be the right word, the UN did pass a few resolution condemning the invasion, but did nothing that really mattered.
Now to say that you can't compare the two, well, I'm going to have to disagree. The Soviets went into Afghanistan for the express reason of making sure that a Communist regime was put into power, and who knows what their intentions were going to be from that point? Dubya ,and his small band of worldwide warriors, went in with the assumption that Saddam either had WMDs (well, they didn't assume he had them, they said he had them), and that he was seeking to expand his programs for WMDs. Now we all know that no WMDs have been found, but Blix himself said that we have no PROOF that all of Saddam's outlawed toys had, indeed, been destroyed.
I am still wondering just how long you think we should have given Saddam to comply with all the provisions of the Cease fire from the first conflict. Saddam thought that he needed WMDs, to use against Iran, if that country ever decided to take up arms against Iraq again, and against the Zionist regime in Israel. Saddam had grand illusions of himself as being the great Arab leader against the west, and, specifically, against the Jews. He wanted to set up a great Arab state, something like the Ottoman Empire. Even if he never got his hands on these weapons, the fact remains that he wanted them, and, if left in power, would have continued trying to get them.
He had to be deposed. The problem the nobody really understood, was how some Muslims would react. There is a large faction of Muslims that believe they must establish The Islamic State (check this site out http://www.islamic-state.org/ It makes for some interesting, and informative, reading! This particular faction does not believe that the west can be worked with. Governments that do not believe in the supreme laws of Allah are not true governments. The closest thing to a true government in their eyes, seems to be what is going on in Iran.
Saddam had to be stopped, but I don't think any of us quite realized just what the West would be going up against if we went in. I think the best case scenario is to get the elections in Iraq done with, even if they don't elect a puppet, and then everybody that isn't a Muslim to get the hell out, unless they are wanted by the Iraqis. Show that we are not in Iraq just to install another puppet regime. But, we have to make sure the West does not repeat the mistakes that were made in Afghanistan after the Soviets were expelled. The West abandoned Afghanistan. Don't abandon Iraq. Give them the money to actually rebuild. But let the Iraqis do the work, or, at the very least, other Muslims. I can't say that I blame any Arab for distrusting the West. They have been manipulated, now is the time to show that we actually mean to try and live in harmony.
Have I confused you all enough?

And, my young friend, I am not trying to belittle you, but I asked what did the United Nations do...which was a big bunch of NOTHING!
Hehe, I side-stepped the UN point to make a point about the US and the Mujahadin. It would take a bit of research to see if the UN did anything of any worth in that situation.
The UN Security Council is composed of 5 permanent members: The US, the UK, France, China, and Russia (not coincidentally, the WW II victors), plus ten other members.
Each of the 5 permanent members holds a veto power over any substantive (i.e., non-procedural) Security Council resolution (i.e., the 5 permanent members must be in unanimous agreement on any substantive Security Council resolution). Obviously, because Russia is a permanent member, it would have been structurally impossible for the Security Council to act against the invasion of Afghanistan. Same for the American invasion of Iraq. If China decided to invade Taiwan after the next election, no Security Council resolution.
And without a Security Council resolution, the UN cannot act.
Blue Order -- Exactly the point. Great work! ![]()
Jeff -- I agree entirely with you when it comes to what the world needs to do with Irak now. Letting them down would be absolutely catastrophic.
