The Union Jack (Great Britain) is such a classic design, it totally kicks the American flag's ass........ :ignore:

(black ops helicopters descend to secret Trevor away to caves where he will be debriefed on the "un-Americanism" of his previous statement. After a successful lobotomy, he is returned to make the following addendum):

....but the USA flag is much better overall and loves freedom more :nervous:

The Union Jack was Canada's flag until December 15, 1964.

Nicos, any info on why Alberta only opted for the English flag?

Did they despise Scotland, or am I just reading way too much into this?

It was probably rational to do that. Since the other countries represented on the Union flag are really English colonies, Alberta may have decided that to be fair, if you have one colonies flag on you should have all and that would get confusing. :rolleyes:

to be accurate, its actually called the union flag, it only becomes the union jack when its on a ship.

but 90% of Brits make the same mitake, so don't worry about it

Thanks for the info -- I never read this before anywhere else, and I have always read/heard it was the Union Jack.

I do like that flag myself because it reminds me of a gently wrapped christmas gift. On the other hand, it also brings back a negative sentiment because it reminds me that the U.K. defeated the French and took over Canada (and especially Québec, where I live) and tried to assimilate my people, between 1760 and, hmmm, let's say 1970. Until that date, to a certain extent, if you didn't speak english, that made you a second class citizen... even if you were part of the French speaking majority.

But that's another question.

For more negative sentiments on said flag, take a look at the debate over being a Catholic in Northern Ireland on another thread.

IMHO, the Union flag largely represents little more than tyranny, colonialism and oppression.

French-Canadians are Catholics as well you know, so we have the same "problem" + language.

But it never went the violent way, the only time violence happened, it was in 1970.
