Does anyone know how to get rid of them? I have about 4 between both shoulders and they can be sore to painful. I've tried a few arthritis ointments and pain killers, but the former just smells like mint and dulls the pain until the next day and the latter just puts me to sleep. Do any of you NOOLers get these and know how to get rid of them, without spending money on a massage? I've looked up stuff about "muscle knots" online and almost all pages mention about getting a massage of some kind, although, at the moment, I can't afford to shell out that much money, especially if it might or might not work.

Massage is the only solution. Ointments ain't gonna get you anywhere if your muscle is knotted.
I suffered from excruciating head-pains a few years back. Had to have scans and everything. Then they worked it backwards to figure I'd got a stiff neck which resulted from a very stiff shoulder - I'd had me left-shoulder pinned as a youngster and whilst I'd accepted I wouldn't have full mobility of it ever again, it had started to freeze up a bit. Needed about 10 weeks worth of massages to break down the knots properly! Ouch! Lovely sensation, mind!!! Get regular massages now so it don't ever happen again!!
Al's right, massage is the only solution. My wife gets a knot in the muscle running across the top of her collarbone quite a lot, I am always having to manipulate it, about 5 times a week I'd say (cue guffaws from Finbarr Saunders and his devotees).
Make sure you opt for the massage "with full release." That'll take your mind off the pain for a while (and probably off Simon Gallup, too). ![]()
