Johnny hands down. much better technique in all the aspects of playing guitar. Porl´s not bad but is just one more of the bunch. IMO

did I make myself clear? ![]()
Come on !
I don't know what is the fascination with Johnny Marr. He's surely the most overrated guitar player in the world! Not that he's bad, but you make all him look like he's the reincarnation of Jimy Hendrix!
And just because of that, it makes me want to vote for Porl. Besides, Porl Thompson is an exciting live guitar player. Can't say the same with Marr... as I've never seen hum play live at all!!! ![]()
In terms of initial impact , and not just in the nme , and tied to the fact that even fans of other genres actualy noticed him .. then I'd say Marr
However in terms of shit spellings of either surname or first name , well , the anglicised Marr from Maher I can live with ... This Porl lark though , the cure fella wins the shit spellin hands down .
Closely followed by any cunt called , Vini , Dani , Gari , Sorl and Robhurt .

Well I HAVE seen/heard Marr live and I was impressed. Hell I was just happy to see/hear THE THE!! Awesome show!
I went to see DM play, but THE THE stomped major Mode bootie!!
Go MARR!!
Marr, and it's not that I'm a huge Smiths fan, cause I'm not. I think that playing with artists like The The, Pretenders, Bryan Ferry, and Talking Heads would indicate that Marr has the ability to mesh with a variety of artists.
Well, after playing with The Cure for several years, Porl has been playing with Robert Plant.
Different style, but... I guess they're even!
The best would be to have both Marr and Porl in a band. The first one is more of a "technical" guitarist while the second is more of an improvised, free-swinger one. I bet they would complement each other very well. :)
LOL this is such a ridiculous comparison. Marr is up there with the Elite!! I'm talking the league as Edge, Satriani, Seargent, Hendrix, etc! Porl is a taxi driver and Marr is a chaffeur. I honestly feel Marr is the best guitarist on the planet, edging out even "the edge"
The Edge is really a mediocre guitarist. Of course Johnny Marr is better than he is, but I've always thought Porl was an underrated guitarist. If you've seen Porl live, like on Show, you'd see what he can do on songs like "Cut", "Doing the unstuck," and "Open." He's played with Page and Plant and, according to interviews with Robert Smith, used to do Led Zeppelin covers in the studio with Boris - to warm up. I've heard "Rank" and have seen clips of the Smiths live, and I must say that Johnny Marr is better in the studio. They're both good musicians, although on most of the Cure singles, with the exception of "Lullaby," there aren't many good guitar solos, while the Smiths seem to save the best guitar lines for the singles.
Porl Thompson is a talented and creative guitarist. Johnny Marr (Maher) is a more talented and creative guitarist. He also has composed, arranged and (co-)produced some of my favourite songs ever. If I could choose just one of them as a bandmate it would be Johnny.

Oh, you just like Porl 'cause he locked lips with Simon Gallup during 'Why Can't I Be You' on the Show vid. ![]()
**Marr. If only for creating that riff in 'How Soon Is Now?'.**
Ever heard of Bo Diddley, mate? ;)
But, yes, Johhny is my favourite of the two. Porl is no doubt a solid musician and plays with a bit of imagination, but really is no different to hundreds of average-to-decent guitarists in hundreds of average-to-decent bands. As a writer and arranger, as well as a genuinely imaginative player, JM is streets ahead. A once in a generation musician. He brought elements of funk, metal, McGuinn-esque jangle and beat pop to create his own style - and most importantly never played the obvious lines. A genius.

Amen to that.

I'm not that perverted. I like both because of their lines and solos, although I wish Porl hadn't been in the background as often, or else he would've received the recognition he deserves.
