I L... I Lo.... I Lov... I Love ..... it's no good I hate the overated ripped off Donna Summer track, the only reason it sold was Factory had a half, and I say half decent marketing department , to create a sleeve to sell the record.

It is rubiish ain't and so crap live, they could play AGE OF CONSENT and DENIAL in the time it takes to traul through it.

But......and this is looking at it from an entirely different perspective that I'll wager not many on here will have considered......

not all of those who attend a New Order gig share the same obsessions as we do, have the same depth of enthusiasm for the minutiae, the yearning for different sets every night, preferences for this and that over that and this etc etc. Just think of how many attend a gig wherever, and how many from that audience are on here despite the ease with which this site is available worldwide. No, the vast majority of those who attend a New Order gig don't do so because it is a near-religious pilgrimage, they do so because they want to hear the songs they know and like, and believe it or not (and record sales don't lie that much) more people want to hear Blue Monday than any other New Order song. People actually complain if it isn't in the set. You only have to listen to the audience talking at the end of some of the US sets in 85, 86 and 87 to hear the complaints when they didn't play it, and these are from people who are sufficiently enthusiastic to want to record the show!

Unfortunately, and whether we like it or not, the band feel compelled to play it as a staple part of the set now, and have done for the last 15 years. Their previous bluster about playing what they want rather than what we want has all been dissipated - just look at all the "Greatest Hits" element of the set over the last 6 years or so. True Faith, BLT, Temptation, Blue Monday all fixtures in the set, unshakeable. The band can play them easily without having to try (another key factor), and they know that the majority of the crowd will be pleased to hear them. The dynamics are all different these days, it's not about showcasing new material, trying out new ideas or being deliberately contrary while raising some more cash to foot tax bills.

Aint that the truth. I can't speak for everyone here but I'm pretty sure the dynamics have changed for most of the hardcore fans as well.In the 80's I slept in train stations and wandered cities all night waiting for the first bus or train home after a gig. reading 89 national express and a tent.Reading 98 flight back from Thailand and a hotel room.not that I wouldn't sleep in a field again to see the Order I'll just avoid it if at all possible.the band have grown up and like their comforts and so have we.i've said before on here for me the excursion to see the band is nearly as important as the gig itself and I've yet to meet up with the hardcore on here pre gig.As long as they don't do a two hour set consisting only of blue Monday then I won't complain too much.

I say they should compromise, play "Blue Monday" but have Barney making noisy feedback with his guitar during it, just like he used to do in the mid-'80s.

I think they ought to play the shortened version they did on TOTP in '83.

Hooky should come out with a giant cod piece and really strut to the audience. When his syndrum part comes up he should use bowling pins.

Seriously, however, as mentioned in some forgotten thread, they may be using Blue Monday as a recovery/resting song. Steve gets a break from drumming (notice how he smiles during this tune?), Barney is free form his guitar and can wander all over the stage, Hooky gets to play a different instrument. Generally a crowd pleaser as well.

Barney doesn't get much of a break during Blue Monday, doing his freaky dancing. The only quiet time he has is when he joins Gillian/Phil or whoever on the keys.

I've never seen New Order, so if they could ever be bothered to tour again, I would be disappointed if they didn't play Blue Monday.

A lot of Steve's "drumming" these days is him triggering samples of him drumming - there isn't the sustained fury of stuff like Denial any more (though Transmission may give him a run for his money!).

Blue Monday? That's the song that was playing in Kinko's (copy place) this afternoon as I walked in to ship a package, innit?

Probably why Age Of Consent and Sunrise got dropped. Too fast. Even LWTUA has slowed down considerably.
