Which bands would you like to travel back in time to see, and on which tour or date.
You have 5 choices, mine are;

Seen most of the older bands (80`s-Smiths,Mondays,Stone Roses etc) at least once,but would have loved to have seen the following:
Talking Heads (stop making sense era). The The (any time!). The Clash (again any time!!).
in no order:
Joy Division (one of the longer, better gigs like Les Bain Douches or the Paradiso)
The Clash (some show before they started filling stadiums and quarries and such)
New Order (something around the time of 1983 would do nicely)
The Cure - Trilogy shows (would've wanted to see 'em play Pornography in its entirety)
Talking Heads- also something around the Stop Making Sense time
The Cure - something from the Picture tour

About 8 miles from where I lived - needless to say I was part of it for a few hours. Malvern (which Castlemorton is part of) has had some significance musically to me, with JD & NO both playing there, and Blessed Ethel coming from the town.

Number one choice would undoubtedly be the Sex Pistols at Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas, where the crowd was seemingly out for blood, and Malcolm seeming all too eager to provide it. Sid drops his bass on some idiots head, God knows what all got thrown about that night, I've always loved this pic of Paul onstage after the show....
Second would be some Joy Division gig, never had a chance to see them.
Talking Heads Stop Making Sense tour was better live than the movie, which is pretty damn good.
Madness would be on the list as well, they played a heavy metal bar on their only jaunt through Oregon (79 or 80).
Any Fall gig around the time of Hex and Perverted By Language.
The Cure - during the Prayer tour. New Order - any time in 1987. Metallica - any gig before Cliff died. Electronic - the Cities in the Park gig Smashing Pumpkins - any pre-1992 gig at the Metro
I saw Joy Div many times, also the Pistols on the Anarchy tour so it would have to be :

The La's ... first tour
The Doors .... pre fucked up bloated Morrison.
AC/DC .... Bon scott era , 'round time of bbc sight and sound concert
New Order - The two nights at the State in March 1983.
Joy Division - Any.
The Cure - A Pornography tour date 1982.
Dean Martin - Any.
The Danse Society - Late 1983.
Possibly as an afterthought, a Beatles date at the Cavern.
New Order- 2 sets in the Hacienda
The Smiths- Any Gig.
Morrissey on the Your Arsenal tour.
Oasis in the mid 1990's
Depeche Mode on the songs of faith and devotion tour.

Apart from 81-83 period I bet I've seen far fewer NO gigs than most of the folks on this site. But I was at this one! Even played footy with Barney, Sean Ryder and Some of the ACR guys!

Some claim to fame that! My Uncle John and his missus went, this was (is) by far the most played bootleg I have, and I have fookin loads. I played this almost every day in 88. I was only 13;) The next neworder gig would've been Reading 89 - both these concerts are fuckin magic!!!
Fleetwood Mac: Any from 1979-1980. Joy Division: Any from 1979- January 1980. King Crimson: Any from 1972-1973. New Order: Any from late 1982- late 1988. Frank Sinatra: Any show from 1955-1970.
Yeah, I'm lazy with the dates, who cares. 
I wouldn't use my time machine just to go see bands. I lost one of my family earlier this year and I'd actually rather use it to go back and see if I could stop that happening.
Hmm, good question...but wouldn't building a time machine and traveling back to distant eras automatically alter the present and future so distinctly that to return to this present time after a journey to the past I've gone cross-eyed 
Anyway:
The Who, 1964-1969 - Just before they became pompous stadium rock is where I'd cut it off. I'd have to see their mod roots and I love the early stuff, right up to and including "Tommy". Nothing against the Seventies stuff, that's just my fave Who era.
Joy Division, 1979-1980 - Naturally to see Ian up close, but also to revel in the kind of atmosphere that was presented in "24 HPP"
Pink Floyd, 1967-1968 - The Syd Barrett edition would be a must-see.
The Beatles, 1961-1964 - back when you could actually hear them live, mostly at the Cavern but also in Hamburg and right around the time they shed their leather "rockabilly" look for the suits.
The Clash, 1977-1980 - After much consideration (the other four were "duh!"), I have to go with the Clash in their heyday. Simply for the excitement.

The 2 sets in 1 night at fac51 was one of my best ever NO experiences.
Loads of gigs I have missed for daft reasons which for either ace set or venue still rankles me.

Going on what Jon Savage said the last Joy Divison gig wasn't anything spectacular apparently. Would have loved to have seen new order encore in Birmingham half an hour after everyone had left the venue though.hehee

Pity it didn't happen really! It may have happened at a different town, but certainly wasn't Birmingham.

That Mick Middles book is full of little mistakes where he gets the venues wrong. Trust me Scott, I'd know if this had happened at Birmingham. There are plenty of other venues it could have happened, but I've seen every Birmingham encore. There are one or two 85 shows where they took their time coming back on, and two famous 84 shows (Copenhagen and St.Austell) where they excelled themselves. Copenhagen's encore of BLue Monday was half an hour after the end of the set, and St.Austell's encore of Face Up was possibly even later than that. I suspect this could be the one Mick Middles refers to as Birmingham - I think he also refers to them playing Torquay, which is also wrong. A lot of his gig references are out of sequence, wrong year/venue/anecdote.
