"The band begin work on the new album on Monday (Jan. 17)! According to the band's official website, the band will start work on their new album with producer Ben Hillier on Monday, January 17th. The sessions will start in Santa Barbara, and will later move on to New York and London - similar to what they did with "Exciter"."

...nothing for me since Alan Wilder has left the band (err... he has, hasn't he ?)... ...listen to his solo projects (RECOIL), and you all will see the spirit he has...

I personnaly think that Alan Wilder alones is crap, Depeche Mode without Alan Wilder is not very good and sometimes crap as well, but DM with AW were great, really great.

I hope that the new album will be better than Exciter.

And Martin and Dave alone are CRAP! Exciter was good though.

I also think Exciter was quite good. By no means their best work but certainly not as bad as it's made out to be.

Probably clutching at straws but the last time Martin L. Gore released a solo album, the next DM studio album was Violator. Here's hoping...

I've never been a fan of DM's albums (except maybe Speak & Spell). But I've always appreciated their singles and very often their b-sides. That's why I promptly went to see them live on their Singles 86-98 Tour way back in '98.

Thanks for that, NOBabe; that's good news.

Exciter certainly was better than Ultra, however I find it a little boring. Also, the influence of the producer (forgot his name...) is more important than for the previous albums, so that Exciter doesn't sound like a real DM album to me. I'm afraid Alan Wilder used to play a crucial role in their music, and nobody seems to be able to replace him. :(

I certainly believe (as far as I can be aware) that Alan Wilder’s role in Depeche Mode has not collectively been taken on board by the three remaining members sufficiently (in that the producer is being asked ‘perform’ too much).

Mark Bell did an outstanding job with ‘Exciter’, but you do feel that if (as I suspect) the 11th Depeche Mode studio album is a more guitar-orientated album, the overall performance element will be taken up more, by Dave as much as Martin (and maybe Fletch will respond even more to the challenge).

Ok, SOFAD, Ultra and Exciter are good albums, but still, they are way inferior to Violator and Music For The Masses.

Seriously, it's like comparing Low-Life/Technique to Republic/Get Ready...

Not the same league.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed SOFAD a lot, but it's not in the same league as Violator, plus I started to hate Depeche Mode when they got quite too religious... Judas, The Buttom Line, even Condemnation.. not my type of tunes!! But I Feel You, Walking In My Shoes and In Your Room, those where solid singles.

On Ultra, I seriously can only remember Useless, It's No Good and Home.. maybe Sister of Night, but the rest, I guess I don't mind them too much.

As for Exciter, Dream On, When The Body Speaks, Shine, Freelove, I Feel Love, but even then, the only song that is up to DM's level is Dream On...

ULTRA is Depeche Mode's most underrated album. Reasons for that:

  1. They didn't tour for that album (because of Dave's recovery from drugs);

  2. Only one single got played on the radio (It's No Good).

Still, some of the tracks on that CD are ace.

The Love Thieves is probably one of my favorite DM tracks ever and it could have been on Violator.

By the way, after reading this thread I decided to put on a random playing of all Depeche Mode albums on WinAmp and it occured to me that the albums from 1990 and previous should all be remastered digitally.

If you compare a track from Exciter or Ultra to a track of Black Celebration, you'll see what I mean... the volume is much higher in the former than in the latter!

They need to equilibrate all that.

Depeche Mode Night January 17, 2005 destination unknown mondays 10pm cst re:broadcasts on retroforwardradio.com (check schedule) wluw.org

i forget who wrote that ultra was an underrated album on one of the above posts as i skimmed through them, but i 100 percent agree with that statement. there is not one bad or average song on that album (the best were sister of night, bottom line, useless, barrel of a gun, and home). the only other album that comes to mind that had nothing but good or great tracks was violator. exciter had like 2 good songs, everything else was average or bad. SOFD was good, but for some reason i thought of one caress and cringed.

The sound of Black Celebration is particulary bad... I think even worse than that of Brotherhood (incidentally, both albums were released the same year).

Yes, exactly... it was a Black Celebration track that pushed me to write this, but the earlier tracks sound as bad when it comes to the "volume intensity".

while i agree the sound is a little muddy on black celebration, it is by far the best material they have ever released. so good!

I cannot understand why the British media seem to think that 'Technique' is New Order's best album. So I'm delighted to find that Spotnick agrees with me!

But as far as 'Exciter' goes, I my view Martin simply allowed himself to experiment with his songwriting more than ever previously. It was a mistake to credit 'Lovetheme' as an album track of it's own, though if you visualise it closely, you may find that it is an excellent way of saying "'Exciter: end of part one".

In other words, 2005 is looking good!

Depeche had some good cheesy singles, then made a few decent albums (all with Mr. Wilder), and is now a lounge act. Get over it. They better redeem themselves with this next one. Hell, even the new Erasure album beats them at their own game.

Oh, and Technique is hardly the album it's cracked up to be. Don't know why everyone seems to have such a hard-on over it. Sources close to the President say that Low-Life is easily their best, followed by Movement, PCL, and Brotherhood, in that order. :D

Black Celeb is very good, especially the (many) songs sung by Martin. But there are several cheesy songs as well, like New Dress and Here is the House, the lyrics of which sound as if they had been written by some idealistic, romantico-revolted teenager. Which Martin maybe still was. IMHO.

ha! i should've clarified, black celebration is depeche mode's best album except for the last three songs which aren't as great (New Dress *is* bollocks).

despite that, i love the lyrics on this album even though they are cheesy--> the worst offender being Sometimes. but isn't that the point? if i was 15 i think i might identify with Sometimes, or something.

anywho, if we're talking about cheesy lyrics we must discuss Blasphemous Rumours. possibly their greatest song musically, but awful lyrics.

Blasphemous runs in a close triumvirate between People are People and Master And Servant for alltime most embarassing DM lyrics.

it's a shame lyrically their worst three songs are all contained on one album! :ignore:

Dead of Night on Exciter. "We're in the zombie room..."

Well they're all still pretty damn solid in instrumentals-- or is it called programming? I'm fuzzy over the proper terms.

It's a bit of both. Martin Gore and, when he was there, Alan Wilder play most of the parts, but the band still has the tape or sequencers running.

All critique and negative thoughts aside, I am just happy to have my two favorite groups of all time putting out new albums. I also hear PSB are getting ready to release a new one. Good year for synth pop

Hopefully, PSB's new album will be more synth-heavy. Release had a few good songs, but Nightlife had more dance, synth tracks. PSB doesn't sound right when there are too many guitars. But, considering "Flamboyant" and "Miracles" were ace singles (with a lot of synths), I'm having better thoughts about their next album.
