Doves In Glasgow Last Night

I think I've realised that Doves define the "great studio band / dull as fuck live" category even more than New Order! I saw them in London just before Xmas and again last night and both were pretty flat affairs although I've more positive memories of the Barras shows in 2002 (the Academy is a far less enjoyable venue I s'pose).

Their choice of set and running order was all over the place too. Opening with Pounding, Words and Black & White Town?!!! Not much subtelty there. And three of their Ace cards dealt in the first 12 minutes.

The biggest gripe though was the lack of new material. Only four tracks off the new album and they didn't play Walk In Fire which I was really looking forward to live.

"Some Cities" will be the album of the year I suspect and it's head and shoulders above WFTSC. Live though they just aren't that entertaining.

Hmmmm. I saw Doves following the release of The Last Broadcast and they were truly magic. One of my top five gigs. Maybe you just got them on an off night...

Never seen them live,but am i the only one who thinks 'Some Cities' is rather disappointing?

Will Bill Oddie be there?

Yup. Judging by the universally positive (gushing in the case of Q Mag!)reviews. Best thing they've done. And with a back catalogue as strong as theirs that's saying something.

I don't disagree. They've not really broken much new ground for me, which may also be true of WFTSC but at 3 albums into your career compared with 27 years, it's less understandable. The only noticeable progression is perhaps a bit of Flaming Lips style guitar parts. A couple of Stone Roses drum beats also sound too obvious as reference points to me. Doesn't mean I don't like it and some of the drumming is awesome. Still some room for some of it to grow on me as well.
