I'm going to be turning 21 this Wednesday and although I have had a few drinks before, I'm wondering what all of you think would be the best alcohol to buy and drink on your birthday. I can't go to a bar but I also can't wake up with a nasty hang over since I have to go to class the next day. I've been told that red wine is economical, and most American beers, from what I've heard, are crap.
Gimme some thing to drink

Cheap red wine won't be very good. And it'll give you a headache. I'd go with a red wine between $10 and $20, preferably a chianti. Better yet, a dry white wine between $10 and $20-- I think the white wines have fewer sulfites, which cause the headaches.
Best of all: Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne, about $33 at discount sellers. No better way to celebrate 21 with your clothes on.
Other suggestions:
A nice bottle of gin, for gin & tonics.
Or some good tequila, and do tequila shots with salt & lime.
FOllowed by lots of water before you go to sleep, to keep the hangover away. Just don't piss yourself in bed.![]()
Oh, and I've heard that the hangover pills really do work.
Whatever happened to pulling up to a liquor store on Crenshaw in your hydraulic, dubbed out cherry-red Caddy in order to buy a couple of 40's?
Buy yourself a half-gallon of disgusting 100 proof Monarch vodka. I have one. It lasts forever and tastes like paint thinner. Mix it up with a lot of lemonade, or anything fruity. Mmmm tasty.
Can't go wrong with a bottle of rum and a 2ltr of Coke!
Or my new fave, Smirnoff Twisted V Blackcherry. I wish it was available in 2 ltr bottles.
If you can get your hands on some Hennessy (Brandy) & mix it with 7up - that always works for me. The hangovers are minimal with this (although, make sure you drink a pint of water after
)
Also Archers Peach Schnapps mixed with Orange Juice is a really relaxing way to get pissed - hangovers aren't too bad, but you could stay drunk for longer than expected![]()
Chances are at 21 you may not get much of a hangover anyway - they get progressively worse in your 20's (IMO)

21? Hey, Champagne. Gives you a bit of a hangover though.
Get a sixpack of European beer, and you'll be just fine :D
for Wednesday, Blue-Eyed Boy! Hope you have a great one!

Sounds lovely! (I'm a sucker for unusual flavours like that.) Is it only available in the US or can you get it everywhere?

Actually, absynthe is illegal in the US.

I've had champagne and it never have me a hang over. I can't go to a bar because I'll have to get myself home. The subway stops running at 12:30 in Boston and I don't want to have to walk home or spent 20 dollars on a cab.
I have no idea if Smirnoff is exported. The twisted V Black Cherry is a "premium malt beverage" (wine cooler). Does not taste like alcohol and is extremely tasty and smooth.

If you didn't get a hangover from Champagne, you didn't drunk enough of it

No it isn't...I've seen it on the shelves at the liquor stores back in Dallas...but it was expensive as all get out!!!
Is nobody going to suggest Pernod? Alright, I will. Get some Pernod down your neck, young man!
And have a very Happy Birthday.

I think if "Absinthe" is sold here it is not the same as the Absinthe that was banned.
Happy Birthday! ![]()
I'd suggest going over to Sunset Grill. It's within walking/stumbling distance, and they have something like 100+ beers on tap, plus pretty much any other drink you could possibly want (including bottled beer, malt drinks, mixed drinks, and wine), and really good food too.
As for what to drink, I can't really make any helpful suggestions, but I can tell you what not to do based on my own 21st birthday experience... Stay away from tequila.

By now,its is a bit late for your b'day, but vodka and coke or orange, scotch or bourbon and coke, and when you get a bit bored with that,Tia Maia or Kahlua and milk, and just before you conk out, mini strawberry or toffee spirits and cream. Finally, there is one thing I haven't tried and they are mini spirits called donuts (which I think are vodka and cream and jam),The next morning ,you will want a stiff drink,so I say start on the vodka.... I could continue....
Jesse, I tried to get Simon over to yours for your birfday prezzie...but he said he had to wash his hair...
sorry man!!!

Oh well. Perhaps for the next tour, Kamar, Mike, and I will stand near the correct exit and I will mob Simon.
Speaking of Kamar, today is also his birthday.

Unfortunately, I couldn't drink anything, because I was informed that I had to meet with my advisor the next morning at 9am. But this Wednesday, I'm planning to drink several white Russians at a club in Philly.

MMM...i love white russians.
I'm sure your advisor would've understood. Hell, I know mine would. After all, I'm an English major, so being a notorious lush is expected.

My advisor probably thinks I'm a freshman. I have to see him about 4 times a year to either talk about class choices or how I'm doing in my classes. Since I'm not taking any literature classes this semester - but two creative writing classes instead - it was just 15 minutes of BS, but my university has a strict drinking policy. If you're on campus you can't have any more than a 6 pack of alcohol in your dorm. Eventhough I'm 21 (but still get mistaken for a high schooler), he'd probably write me up for coming in smelling like booze.

There's a word for people like that...
