BIGINOIL wrote: Whilst getting dressed this morning, I noticed that I have the word 'Patrick' written aroud the waistband of my underpants.

I don't know whether this is important, or even the sort of thing I should be posting here, but there it is.

If that's a reference to me, Big, I'm honored.

If not, as H might say:

Coincidence?

I think not.

By the way, I've posted a revised version of the theory.

Just sneaked on for a quick glance. Update looks really good. Particularly like the way you have explained that the despair that people feel when they're listening to "Too Much Ovaltine" is intentional.

Don't spend too long on here and risk losing your job. One day, our work will be recognised as being worthy of public funding. Until then, we must be sure to maintain other income strings.

I nearly fell over when I saw my underpants this morning. I have never noticed the writing on them before.

Can't be a coincidence though, no way.

Yes, we've all gotten somewhat carried away lately. But, as I've said before, it's not every day that one's favorite band releases its best work in 20 years. Still, order must be restored.

When you do feel that you can spare a moment, please feel free to post to the theory thread. After all, as with Ozzy/Jersey, that's the only way it will remain near the top.

I'm glad you liked my take on WO.

It's turning into a day of coincidences. I posted a message about the Glastonbury line-up, and the time stamp on the message was exactly 12.00.00.

On a normal day, this would not be worthy of comment. Following my underpant business this morning, I would say it's turning into quite a strange day.

I shall take the initiative and buy a lottery ticket on the way home. Should I win a substantial amount, I will consider funding a formal research programme into the links between New Order, Homer, Ozzy Osbourne and the cities of New Jersey and Houston, Texas.

Emeritus Professor Smith shall Preside.

I didn't really think you were serious about the underpants. Is it a brand name or something like that?

By all means buy a lottery ticket.

Look at Nic's luck in guessing # 22.

Click the Link - Patrick - don't think this is an official site - I'll keep digging. I was considering sending you a photo of myself in my underpants, but thought this site would be more appropriate (I wasn't really, I just said that as a joke).

I'm sure Nic didn't guess at #22. He either worked it out by some very scientific means or cheated by going round the back of every record shop in Britain and getting all the weeks till receipts from the waste. Amazon publish their sales figures daily, so you only have to add the two together and you're there.

The day's luck continues. We have been told that this office is to close at 17.30 tonight for a computer upgrade or something, which means that I will not have to work late. In addition, I have just had one of those ideas that is so simple and correct that nobody (including myself) will be able to believe that it has taken so long to appear.

I have posted my idea on the correct thread, which in this case happens to be the 1st revision of the Odyssey thread.

I don't believe we have that brand here.

Congratulations on your work luck.

I've responded to your latest insight. Brilliant work, as usual.

I bought them from a sports shop in Hull.

Before you knew me, probably.

Christmas 2003, as I recall. I was working down there and kept running out of essentials.

Keep in mind that I don't necessarily know where Hull is in relation to your normal whereabouts, Big.

If Aberdeen is thought of as being the nape of a man's neck, the city of Hull would be located at around the base of the spine, just above the arsehole.

That makes it much clearer. It sounds like it must have been a dreary time in your life, Big.

It was. I only intended to stay for three days, ended up being more like two months. I stayed in a hotel where I learned the word dipsomaniac and (as you know) I bought some new underpants. Oh, I also tripped on a loose paving stone and cut my hand so badly that it will be scarred forever. I therefore have two things to remind me of that time.

I'm horribly bored today.

I'm very sorry to hear all those things, Big. I wish I could do something about it.

You may have noticed that neither DC nor H has the slightest interest in the theory.

Don't worry, it was ages ago.

Do you want me to have a word with them?

It sounded like the horrible boredom was fairly recent.

If you think it would do any good to have a word with them, sure.

I realised that after I'd pressed send, but knew you'd understand what I meant.

The dull time in Hull was ages ago.

The boredom today will be over in 30 minutes.

Don't worry about helping with that - you already do :thumb:

I'll speak to the others on the correct forum now.

I'm glad the horrible boredom isn't a lasting darkness.

Whatty appears a little upset by my rebuke.

I feel a bit bad.

What did you write then delete?

I wasn't sure how long you'd be gone, so I wrote that I thought you were off eating, but that I was sure you'd be back soon.

Then when my post went up, you had posted in the interim. So I deleted mine, in an attempt to avoid confusion.

You might try editing yours so your name will appear on the thread list as the last poster.

That was very kind. An interesting catch, while clearly not our intended target.

Obviously an intelegent and articulate person - just what we were looking for, if not exactly who.

Any thoughts on gender?

The person says "My name is Ladybugz44"; not definitive, but I doubt a man would pick that.

Also the writing style seems somewhat feminine to me.

You may have missed my post above about H being jealous. It appears the reason the theory doesn't interest him is that I've been thanking you for your contributions and not mentioning him.

Well although you have used my ideas in a more direct manner, it's surely appropriate for you to acknowledge the inspiration and support of the others as well. If the initial idea was yours and Whatty’s, you shouldn’t really freeze him out now.

That's the thing with acknowledgements though; once you start thanking one person, you have to thank more, then someone feels left out and you have to thank them too. Before you know it, your serious piece has turned into the Ed Stewart Request Show.

Why not remove all references and just put a global statement at the end (or at the start) thanking all who helped? You could say something like Thanks to all at NOOL, particularly the following – then list everyone you like in Alphabetical order, to avoid looking as though there’s a pecking order (while still ensuring that I am quite near the top!!!)

If I had to come up with one criticism of the piece, it was that your references to tend to interrupt the flow of the narrative somewhat. Perhaps it would be better all round if they were to go. This isn’t helped by the fact that some of us have names which sound silly in the context of a high-minded work of academic significance such as yours. If I was called Professor BIGINOIL, it would be different.

I’m thinking of changing my name to HOUSTON OZZY FAN anyway, so the references won’t make much sense soon anyway.

I suspect it's too late to undo the damage with respect to H. I honestly felt, and still do, that your contributions have been much more central than his.

A definite problem with the piece as it stands is that it was not all written at one time, and the writing styles varied during the different composition periods. That includes the manner of crediting people for their contributions. I did think about a credits section. But I was in a hurry to get something up for public consumption.

Plus of course I've had to fit it in between more remunerative occupations.

Well, I will continue working on it. With your help I hope.

I never expected DC to have anything to say about it in any event. It's not his sort of thing.
