I shall be voting for the Lib Dems.

Being something of a specialist in this field, i urge everyone who is eligible, to vote. it is your democratic privilege. And if none of the parties suit your taste, then go to the ballot box and spoil your ballot paper. If everyone who didnt vote last time did this, then blair would have no mandate.

Remember, a vote for blair is a vote for fascist bush

Labour, as dismayed as I am with Blair, the chances are that Brown will be in charge in a couple of years time, which can only be good.

No matter how dismayed I am, I could never bring myself to vote for the Tories. Lib Dems would be the choice if Labour really fucked up.

I told you before, i am a civil libertarian. Just a right wing one.

Lib Dems have mostly the best policies. The Tories will fook up the economy, have us pull out of europe, cosy up to bush even more than blair. The Lib Dems wont do that. So hence they have my vote.

If there was a party who was prepared to tackle scroungers, and help students and those deserving of financial assistance off the state, they would get my vote. But none of the main parties appear to be willing to tackle this. Which is a disgrace, as i for one am sick of teenage mums and unemployed people (and by that, i mean people who actively do not look for work for years and years and sit at home and watch trisha, and realise that theres money in having kids) being given accomodation and a load of money for not getting of there arse while i slog my guts out day in day out trying to better myself. A fair and just soceity? My arse.

And despite being pro israel and support some aspects of the war on terror, it doesnt mean i like Bush.

I don't know yet if i can vote LABOUR this time.Always voted LABOUR but feel a bit cheated this time.So i may have to think long and hard this time. The times have changed NOW.The BLAG society are the REAL winners. As someone who NO help with a £400 mortgage and only £210 a month money whilst unemployed,i know to have rented and not bothered working 12 hour weekend nights like i did in IT,i could have blagged a good living by doin FCUK all, like many of my mates, worked on the side and have NO WORRIES when you don't work. The stories i could tell
you would make you question why you bother getting up to do a MUNDANE job whilst the wheelers and dealers LIVE. This reminds me i must apply for that shit job in morning!

See, there you go. (at the risk of sounding patronising, apolgies if i do) Who is saying to Mick "we'll help you." No one. Disgraceful.

Good luck with the job Mick.

will the collapse of MG Rover swing voters away from labour and towards libdems or other parties?

Doubt it. Even if it did Labour has such a huge majority in those types of constituencies that it wouldnt make a huge difference.

Is this a joke?? April 1st was a few weeks back y'know....

The comment about "teenage mothers and unemployed people" is approximately the stupidest single sentence I believe I have ever read on NOOL. Are you really this much of a cunt?

Come on, which wag voted BNP?! :skeptic:

Liam, for a lad who obviously doesn't like to sit on the fence politically speaking, why then waste your vote on a party which does?! You're better off spoiling your ballot paper, surely (take her to a show, buy her a slap up meal, etc!).

And I though our next election would be complicated... :skeptic:

We have the liberals, the conservatives, the new democratic party and the bloc québécois (independent Quebec related party)...

Only 4 to pick from ;)

Sure there is a huge bunch of parties what won't even get 1% so they are not listed here.

We have the two party system: Labour or Conservative.

Oh, and then people who can't make their minds up vote Liberal.

And BNP:thumb:

 I have to admit, I’m pretty confused.

It is difficult to see how any right wing economic policy can coexist with a liberal approach to civil liberties. It is also difficult to see how you can pick and choose aspects of the “war on terror” that you like. Hmmm, I’ll have some democracy in Afghanistan (err, its still a warzone) and tough talking to Iran, but I’m not so keen on Guantanamo or support for Uzbekistan.

The Lib-Dems (in my opinion) are a joke of a party. Trying to soak up votes to the left of labour, and right of Howard by any means. A wishy-washy collection of liberals, social democrats, and neo-liberals (yes, there are a few). Put champaigne Charlie in office a few years, and he would be as bankrupt as Bliar and the rest of them.

As for Gordon Brown? – I wouldn’t pin all my “old Labour” hopes on Mr Prudence either. The manufactured battle between 2 members of the same party for the top job has to be one of the masterstrokes of this campaign.

The BNP and the Torys are getting harder and harder to distinguish.

back to Liam: your generalisations on the long term unemployed, and unmarried mothers aren’t very nuanced - epically for a graduate of the Human sciences. Noone likes “scroungers”, but the scroungers you resent are uniquely working class.

The other “scroungers” are not working class, and as a result will probably never need financial assistance off the state. Rover was mentioned in this thread, and I ask you will the scroungers on the board of that company (who bled it dry) ever need assistance off the DSS or NHS? – not likely. What about the Royal family – lounging around all day fucking their in-laws on the tax payers expense account? Or what about the scroungers like Branson who have pocketed (to date) £10billion off the British taxpayer since the privatisation of British Rail, and are running the railway further into the ground than any amount of Tory governments.

There are plenty of teenagers and long-term unemployed who are “getting off their arse” and trying to improve their lot. I know I’d prefair to be stressed about exams and other pressures, than to have none at all. Put simply, would you want to sit around all day listening to Trisha? I know I wouldn’t.

There is no money in having kids. Any onliner with kids (thankfully I don’t) will tell you that.

The people robbing us blind (in Ireland and the UK) aren’t immigrants desperate for work, or drop-outs, or teenage mothers – but the multimillionaires who have made their mountains of cash on the back of the working and professional working classes, and who refuse to redistribute any of it back to society – be that through the state or other means.

The tax dodgers (legal and illegal ones) – aren’t they scroungers too?

Just lost a hell of a response. :(

If anyone if completley pissed off with the whole system then i would encourage them to spoil their ballot paper. If everyone did this last time, it would have sent a clear message to the politicians. Plus, a lot of MPs wouldnt have got voted in, i think. Not sure what the law is regarding spoilt ballor papers 'winning' seats.

I'll take a guess on this one.

It's just like skinning up. Spoilt papers go in the bin.

Well, I think Blair's in big trouble, but he can maximize the damage done by I'm just kidding I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. :evil4:

In all seriousness, you should elect Charles as king. He's had a lifetime to practice being an empty-headed figurine of a bygone era that really masks the uneven social divide which allowed his relatives to assume power in the first place and crap all over civilization "in the name of England" for centures...but that's just off the cuff.

what? no welsh nationalists on the board? c'mon!

if i were lucky enough to have UK citizenship i'd vote lib dem. however, here in the states i'm a registered green and i like the idea of greens having more of a voice in parliament (because, let's face it, they're probably never going to have a voice in congress!). however, the lib dems and the greens are closer on the political spectrum o nmany issues than either (especially the greens) would dare to admit. while i lean toward the greens in many respects, especially here in the US, i am by no means solidly green (i couldn't give two s*its about GM foods, for example--what the hell do you think apples are, for god's sake??); nor am i solidly lib dem--they're more libertarian with regards to the economy than i am.

i suppose it would come down to where i lived. if i lived in a solidly lib dem constituency (like northeast fife, where i used to live), i might vote green as i wouldn't be risking a lib dem loss. on the other hand, if i lived in a tory stronghold like kensington and chelsea, i'd vote lib dem to give them every vote they could muster!

Oh, and then people who can't make their minds up vote Liberal.

That's the way it used to be until 1993 when the conservative party lost the election and got completely out of the map, then regional parties started to appear... Reform Party in the Web, Bloc Québécois in Québec.. last year the Reform merged with what was left of the conservative.

Not that you might care, but that's the way it is .

the problem is, nobody in Quebec will vote for THOSE conservatives, because they are friends of Mr W Bush, and fortunatly, nobody in Ontario neither... but a recent corruption saga is charging the data, since the liberal government doesn't have the majority of deputes, we can go in election any day... :(

Other fact of life, Canada is rules by a prime minister from Quebec ever since I am born... and ever since Quebec started to try to seperate, the conservative leader is not a Quebecer, who know what will happen!

We can't spoil votes this side of the water anymore, due to electronic voting.

  1. Its time the Americans got their fill of politicos they’ve never heard of
  2. Im Always interested in the party political outlook of certain onliners after certain issues around the mid-east and war on terror and other social issues were raised last year (around examtime, its always stressful)
  3. To get some thoughts out there from those across the water
  4. Because every Irish newspaper (including the Times) is deeply reactionary and insular in its outlook, and (with occasional exceptions) have nothing new or interesting to say. As a result I generally take the Guardian, and its packed with UK elections these days.

I’m not party political myself, and have limited faith in the democratic or accountable powers of the state to a majority of working people. I am interested in power structures, democratic structures, their limits, and why they are limited. I think these are important issues for everyone.

If you were to take an accurate survey (as they will on may 5 in the UK), you would find a majority (and certainly more than the 25% so far in this poll) will not vote at all. This raises serious questions about the validity of any parliament. A majority of my peers don’t vote, and say it doesn’t affect them, and to be honest, they are absolutely correct.

The question I think we should all ask is: Why?

For my part, I think that parliament and politicians are powerless, and therefore apathetic toward their citizens – and not vice versa.
