my two boys are lovely.
gorrie--named after john gorrie, the refrigeration pioneer, who was from the town my parents lived in when they got him. he used to climb in the fridge every time they opened it and they couldn't get him out, hence his name. a few months ago he took off out the door and went on a five week 'vacation'. my parents, convinced he was dead, got another cat. gorrie returned and, as they could not have three cats in their apartment, gave him to me where he joined...
tyrone--16 pounds of pure love. named after christopher guest's character in 'the princess bride'. i fell in love with him at the pound a few months back when my parents and i were there looking for gorrie. he was full-grown and getting close to the dreaded 'last cage,' the cage after which lethal injection is the punishment for not being a cute and cuddly kitten who is easy to adopt.
sadly, my parents' older cat (who i consider my brother) was put to sleep two weeks ago after a short illness (possibly the early stages of cancer). he was 14 or 15. we don't really know how old he was as he was an adult when we adopted him; we had him since 1993. his ashes now sit in a tin on my parents' dining room table, his favourite spot. the new cat, ernie, hates everyone but my parents and has attacked me, unprovoked, while i've been on the toilet, talking on the phone, and doing laundry, among other things. i call him patty mccormack, after the actress in the film 'the bad seed'. i can picture him perfectly with that long blonde hair and those braids, the little twit.
