1980: Very Good Year or Very bad One?

I base this on the fact that I'm tired and should be in bed, but also because (as you probably already know) it's been twenty-five years since Ian Curtis died, and I just got to thinking about how the year he died (1980) stands in most people's minds

Consider the evidence: besides the obvious loss of Mr. Curtis, we lost

Peter Sellers (July 24) Bon Scott (February) Steve McQueen (don't know which month) John Lennon (Dec 8)

And there was Mount St. Helens, Reagan elected, Iran Hostages Crisis....

On the other hand, I turned one on October 9 :D

What's your take? Am I simply wasting time? Do I have too much time on my hands to think about this stuff

Yes you do have too much time on yer hands. For me it was a good year.

1980 was also the year Hitchcock died. Two of my idols died that year...Hitchcock and Ian Curtis.

On the other hand, The Empire Strikes Back came out in May 1980 (a few days after Ian died, actually), and that's the best of the Star Wars series

Yeah it was a good year, two great Fall albums came out, Totale's Turns and Grotesque. Of course, Mt. St. Helens corners the local concern about the nature of things, and I didn't find out about Ian's death until about a month afterward, the NME was on strike or something like that.

1. empire strikes back! the first film i remember seeing in the theatre--summer 1980.

2. i finished kindergarten and was very proud of myself for completing that milestone.

i couldn't have cared less about ian curtis, hitchcock, peter sellers, or the rest of them. i was 5 (turned six in november) and had no idea who they were yet. i do remember john lennon's death, though. i remember watching it on the television news that evening and my father exclaiming, 'oh, no!' i asked him who this lennon person was and he said that he was a famous singer from a '60s band.
