jesus lizard (1991, gothic theatre, denver)--the guitarist was so pissed he passed out on stage, and the lead singer exposed himself. he's not the most attractive man, needless to say.

spiritualized (1994, shepherd's bush empire, london)-- booooring!

extreme (1992, MTV new year's rockin' eve party, roseland, NYC)--the tickets were free and they were one of many acts so no, i didn't pay. and they sucked. no surprise there!

1. Sonic youth(2004)Central park, NYC. Their noise shit doesnt cut it anymore. Nobody was moving, and it went on for eternity. Took a walk in central park to pass time

2. Magnetic fields(2004)town hall, nyc- when did these electro-popers go new age.

3. Nirvan(1993)buffalo,ny- Never cared for them too much. I dont see the fuss about them. Sound was awful, and they had no energy.

Worst performance by a band, not necessarily a bad one, would be The Gun Club. Jeffrey Lee Pierce was fucked up pretty bad for this one, he barely kept it together for the most perfunctory performance I've yet to see; no energy from him whatsoever, the only reason I stayed for the entirety of the 45 minute set after that was to see how Patricia Morrison and Kid Congo carried on. The evening wasn't a total loss anyway, discovered one of my all-time fave bands that night, the Miracle Workers, at least before they turned into a sub-Stooges outfit.

Simple Minds would definitely be second. Count me as a person who liked their earlier stuff, up till New Gold Dream, but got bored beyond belief with their records after that. That night we got nothing off of NGD, the only concession to the past was a hurried encore of Love Song, but the rest of the rest was the sort of bombastic stuff that fit more in line with U2. Not another totally bad night though, Shriekback, with Gang Of Four bassist Dave Allen, easily blew Kerr & Co. off the stage.

Never cared for the band Delta 72 either live, heard they made some decent records for Touch And Go, but they were a mess live trying to play their mix of rock and soul live. This was before a set by Man.....Or Astro-man??? (whatever happened to them?)

Special dishonor goes to Oregon's own Dharma Bums, lame REM wannabes. My g/f at the time knew them, they were annoying as hell live, and they had the gall to walk out en masse during New Order's 1989 Portland show, they were sitting in front of us, so it wasn't hard to see their reaction to the band.

1. Har Mar Superstar, opening for the Strokes in 2001. Picture a man stripped down to his briefs gyrating to prerecorded primitive beats on a boombox. Could almost border on so-bad-its-ironically-good conceptual art.

2. ...And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead a few months ago gave one of the worst performances of all the times i've seen them. They are normally great and rocking but they were totally flat this time.

3. Bright Eyes. I can't believe the insane amount of hype this choad gets.

The three uber-Christian bands I had to sit through as part of Carrowinds' special "Chruch Goers get in Free" summer program several years ago. Imagine getting to ride all the really cool stuff at an amusement park, then having to sit through "Jesus is, like, so cool! Now we're gonna sing a song about him that was on our God is My Man album, which we're sure all of you own!" "Totally, Jesus is wicked hot!" "My favorite saint would definitely have to be Peter!" "There are other religions, but there's only one way to heaven...and Led Zeppelin had it right when they said there was a 'stairway'! Let's do our Christ-centric version!"

All I kept thinking during that time was "please kill me, God. Now, please."

Die Kruezen--openned for The Butthole Surfers 1988-89? We sat through it with our fingers in our ears because it was too painful to listen to otherwise.

VHS or Beta--openned for Duran Duran this year. Basically take Rober Smith and cut off his balls and shove them up his ass, a drum machine with Blue Monday and a J Marr wannabe but sucks and a generic bass player you get sonic shit.

The Cure playing 39. If there ever was a need to kill Fat Bob it would be when they play 39. Goes on and on and on and on and on and on like an ingrown toe nail. You just want a quick act of violence to end it.

You had a bad time with Joe Pop-O-Pie? Could've been some sort of chemical intake that made me forget the bad stuff (saw them 85 and 86), but I don't recall anything that made me wince. Of course, maybe Joe and his band got their shit together as well by that time.

The band played Truckin' while Joe Pop-O-Pie walked a small circle on stage exhorting people to throw money.

We left, went up the street to the On Broadway, where it turned out the Dead Kennedys were playing, and a female fan was exhorting Jello to take off his pants.
