holiday in the UK

alright - i'm planning my holiday there and want input from UK NOOLers as to what is a must see. i'll be there 2 weeks and part of the second week i'll be in scotland. i'm not going to shop or go to fancy restaurants because the exchange rate is BLOODY AWFUL btwn the USD and GBP. i'm more of an historical sites, small villages, castle visiting, free to roam hiking kind of tourist ~ but would love recommendations that are 'off the beaten path'.

Try the link below to give you some ideas National Trust Places to visit. NT look after most castles.

The National Trust charges entry to some sites so if you plan on doing a lot of visits in your fortnight, membership could be worth investigating. This would be about £30.

Most museums are free entry and there are some excellent ones about, if you like castles etc I can strongly recommend the Royal Armouries in Leeds, a modern building but stacked with armour and jousting or swordfighting displays if you're lucky.

ooooh you must come to chorley in the north west of england m8,there is tons of historical stuff to see. there is the "yates wine lodge"on market street,thats the place where harry ramp the tramp first pissed himself in public,and of course you couldnt miss "applejacks" a popular meeting place for the locals and an exellent place to get a glimpse of the local culture. and no trip to chorley could be complete without a visit to the BIG LAMP chippy or chorley market,where you can buy CHORLEY CAKES,a delicious mix of raisins puff pastry and lard and then smothered in butter and fried if u like. you could finish of your trip to the local new order museum,ROCKET MICKS HOUSE:D

in scotland, make sure to visit culross, in fife. it's near dunfermline and probably the most picture-perfect village in all of scotland. jedburgh is lovely, as well, as the borders are often overlooked so you don't get many tourists there. the glencoe and loch leven area make for a beautiful drive, but avoid fort william, as its not worth much. and don't forget beautiful cumbernauld!

if you're in blackpool, make sure to ride the big one (if you're a roller coaster aficionado, that is), and the lake district is always a treasure.

finally, one cannot pay a visit to england without passing through milton keynes and feeding her friendly (albeit rather sedentary) cows.
