I know i should keep my opinion to myself sometimes but this group always drove me crazy. However 1969 was a track i throughly enjoyed.
The Velvets, certainly.
Have only heard one 16 HP album Rian, Secret South is the title I think, very good stuff, brilliant cover of Dylan's Nobody Cept You.
1979 is the only Pumpkins song that I can stand as well

i may have to agree with you on this one. i saw them do a 3 hour set in january 1996 in NYC as a 'warm-up' for the tour on which they were about to embark. no opening act, just the pumpkins at a small venue in the city (the academy). awesome.
I think any list of American bands must include the Byrds, the Doors, Velvet Underground (but of course), the Stooges, Talking Heads, REM, Jonathan Richman's original Modern Lovers, Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two, The Flying Burrito Brothers (at least while Gram Parsons was still there), Green Day, Weezer....the list goes on and on (surprisingly, considering how Anglo-centric my record collection tends to be)

Smashing Pumpkins were awesome, especially from 1990-1995. When I saw them in Philly in 2000, they weren't into their new material, although all of the old songs they played that night (I am One, Today, Mayonaise, Blew Away, 1979, and Ava Adore) were all awesome.

Cheers, quite sure I will indeed. But.......on the front page of their web site, the band have announced a split.....An accumulation of differences, mostly political and spiritual, separates us today and prevents us from honestly going any further..

The singer/songwriter from 16 horsepower have released a CD under the name "Woven hand" (or something like that). Same sound as before=good! I only have one or two tracks from that CD, but they are ace.

I agree. It seems that Phish's fan base is composed mostly of New England college students. Because I'm in Boston for school, it means I'm usually stuck with someone who thinks Phish is the greatest band ever. Quite frankly, when a song doesn't have direction, it sounds boring. Although the members of Phish aren't bad musicians, their songs have no direction and the lyrics are inane.

I like VAST too. Not many know about them, or I should say him (Jon Crosby) but what terrific music. A blend of rock, electronic, goth and chanting, among other styles. Slightly reminds me of Trent Reznor of NIN, but better. Highly recommended!
I am unable to narrow down to only one but at the top of my list would have to be REM. Notable favs are Doobie Bros, Talking Heads, OutCast, most 60s and 70s Motown acts. So on and so on...;)
