I was listening to Ministry's 12 inch singles today and I still find it amazing how they went from light industrial/new wave to one of the loudest industrial/light metal bands in the world.
any other bands that you know of that drastically changed their sound and image?
Bowie has had the most drastic changes.

I really hate the shit Ministry took after Psalm 69, that was a rockin' bastard and the next studio lp, Filth Pig did not get an entire spin on my stereo.
Celtic Frost went from Being a Devil Worshipping, Bannned from the U.S.Thrash Metal Band to a lipstick and hairspray Glam Metal Band, this was a huge Blow to me then i was 12

Prince comes to mind, after his phenomenal success with Purple Rain he seemed to revel in more self-indulgent material and do his own thing just like a true artist/musician. For better or for worse, I guess it’s a matter of opinion.
I suppose Ministry falls along the same line, I was a huge fan of them when they were more "softer"...."Land of Rape of Honey" was awesome and even liked "With Sympathy" and that's going way back (Alain Jourgensen denies ever making "with sympathy"...lol!) "Twitch" is my fav.
I had With Sympathy once, sold it soon after I bought it, pretty damn boring from what I recall.
The Mekons, from going from punky thrash to county and western-ish honky tonks, over the course of their career, get my vote.
Jonathan Richman started out as a proto-punk and went to acoustic kiddie songs, country-and-western, and scoring "There's Something About Mary". Not quite as drastic as some of the other examples, but an interesting case. 
Lou Reed's had a few different guises over his career, but they're all kinda in the same realm of music 
The Byrds went from electric folk rock to stripped-down country. 
And, of course, there's Dylan (folkie to rock 'n' roller) 
XTC went from carnival synthesizer pop-punk to They Might Be Giants-influencing drum heavy geek pop to dull, studio-rich pastoral albums.
Blur started as a Madchester/Shoegaze pastiche, then became a modern XTC, then the guitarist left and they became a bizzare mix of indie rock and world music.
Japan went from anachronistic late-70s glam rockers to the prototype for Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet in terms of sound and appearance.

Swapped dance for geetars and even changed their name along the way!
Primal Scream started out as an indie jangling C86 type band, I vaguely remember (though they probably don't).
Also New Order started out as an intense and brilliantly original band. Quite a drastic reinvention there I think!

my first thought turned to blur, as well. leisure to think tank--what a long, strange trip it's been.
How about Underworld... The first two albums are "simple" pop albums and then came the techno output...
Alanis Morissette comes to mind immediatly.... (if you want to hear that, check out for "Too Hot" by Alanis.. in fact she was only called Alanis back then)
After a very poor dance records, she took a few years off and did Jagged Little Pill...

You could say the Clash as well, they went from pure punk to all kindsa different shit, ska, reggae, combat rock

That's a good example, I didn't care much for the early Creation singles (though the b-side Velocity Girl is excellent) or their first album, but since then, pretty much all

The punk of Ultravox! to the synth laden sound of Ultravox.
Marillion as early Genesis copyists to what they do now.
Actually, Genesis themselves changed quite a bit.

I have a couple of friends that confuse new order and depeche mode!!!Which i can not see at all except some synths. This makes me sick

I don't see how, either. DM's best songs are all synths, no bass, and they don't yse (or rarely use) a bass sequencer. Plus, Alan Wilder, unlike Gillian, plays most of his notes. And, more obviously, David Gahan is a far better singer than Barney - in my opinion. But he also uses vibrato when he sings and has a much deeper voice - and knows how to dance on stage.
