Very simple topic: there is a band or artist you simply can't stand, but this band/artist is held up as a "great", "fantastic", or even "supergroup" example of good rock music. So who makes your skin crawl? 
My vote goes to Southern boys themselves, Lynyrd Skynyrd (or however it's spelled). You take an okay bar band and pump them up as innovators and legends. I'm sorry, but a Southern man like me don't need them around anyhow 
The Beatles. Too young for Beatlemania but everytime I hear girls screaming as The Fab Four play I Wanna Hold Your Hand I think of Duran Duran circa 1984.

In all of the metric-fuckton of albums the Fall has produced, i've heard possibly one song worth listening to more than once.
UB40 might very well have broken-in reggae Stateside, but no other English artists have been more effective in creating a neutered, electronics-drowned mutation of real reggae. Besides, they're the reason "Red Red Wine" is heard in every restaurant and bar in the known universe now(hint: not the Neil Diamond version).
Three words: Television, Marquee Moon.
The Human League weren't exactly the 'revolutionary force' in early electronica as they're made out to be.
I've always found Suede a little too namby-pamby musically in comparison to contemporaries like James. Once the guitarist left they were already fairly laughable and one of the best-forgotten footnotes of Britpop. The Charlatans UK were much better also-rans.

I didn't know when I started this thread that one of my fave groups (the Beatles) would come under such attack. Oh well, they are a bit overplayed and over-referenced.

I don't think there are any, it's all a matter of taste, and well, if I find a band not too bad, but many people like it, doesn't mean the band isn't good.

"Once upon a time" was the album.
I never really lost my interest in them. I extremely love their period from "Sons and Fascination" up to "Real Life". The latest album "Cry" was OK again.

There were some brilliant guitarists coming out of San Francisco in the 60's-- John Cipollina and Jorma Kaukonen, for example-- but Jerry Garcia wasn't one of them. An utter mystery why this over-rated band ever achieved the cult status it did.

Have to agree U2 is incredibly overrated, their olders songs were brilliant- Pride, Sunday Bloody Sunday etc...but after that it was all shiit with Bono gallivanting around like some kind of a messiah. True sellouts once, twice over. Savvy PR, I'll give them that.

Interpol, I've got their first album, heard the second, still baffled by their appeal.
How or why the Manic Street Preachers are even popular is a good guess, I was given a copy of Generation Terrorist, which was good for a laugh (and made a nice base to burn a candle on) , I thanked whatever deity's responsible for us being here that I didn't waste my own money. Only heard a couple of things since then, nothing's changed my mind, and their song on the Chemical Brother's DJ mix album was the low spot indeed.

Never been able to get into the Fall (find Smith's monotonous voice _so_ annoying, like fingernails on a blackboard), but feel bad about disliking them when I really like Pavement, as Pavement quite clearly ripped them off.
How can one call UB40 'overrated' when they've never been regarded as anything other than a somewhat plodding cover versions-based job creation scheme in the first place? Actually I don't dislike them, would even listen to them on occasion. Yes they're nothing special but have never been claimed to be by anyone anyway so 'overated' seems unfair.
The Human League pre-split were genuinely original I think. Even if those first lps sound rather dull now.

I bought OK Computer and Amnesiac and tried listening to them with an open mind but was dumbfounded. This was at the height of the music press having their tongue up their ass and the masses seemed to be duped into thinking OK Computer was one of the top 3 albums ever made.
Does anyone even still listen to that album? Was it all just some kind of mass delusion?

Dave Matthews Band... nice boring music for bland generic boring unadventurous people... Dave is a nice guy i guess but why did this band become superstars? a perfect example of a boring white guy stealing "ethnic" music and making it bland for consumption for boring white people
Pearl Jam ... hardly deserving of all the respect they have gotten over the last 15 years, hardly alternative or punk, very competent and very good at being mediocre and challengingly unchallenging... inspired dozens of bad, boring, unoriginal bands, sort of a alternative band for people who dislike alternative bands
U2... this band has practically been deified in some ways, i guess because of an absence of 70s style "BIG" rock bands anymore. Bono is a twat. Joy Division made more essential and influential music in their short time.

Gotta admire Eddie's stance on things like Ticketbastard, and being able to get Epic to release a ton of live albums, but the music is so bloody pedestrian it's a shame. I like a few songs here and there, but after a show of theirs in 98 I think (Frank Black opened), all I got was a dull headache.
