Very simple topic: there is a band or artist you simply can't stand, but this band/artist is held up as a "great", "fantastic", or even "supergroup" example of good rock music. So who makes your skin crawl? 
My vote goes to Southern boys themselves, Lynyrd Skynyrd (or however it's spelled). You take an okay bar band and pump them up as innovators and legends. I'm sorry, but a Southern man like me don't need them around anyhow 
The Beatles. Too young for Beatlemania but everytime I hear girls screaming as The Fab Four play I Wanna Hold Your Hand I think of Duran Duran circa 1984.

Now this is my kind of thread, i'm the official "So overrated" guy in every conversation. I can't be bothered to be decisive, so i'll go off on a long-winded, pretentious tangient like a good journalist should

In all of the metric-fuckton of albums the Fall has produced, i've heard possibly one song worth listening to more than once.
UB40 might very well have broken-in reggae Stateside, but no other English artists have been more effective in creating a neutered, electronics-drowned mutation of real reggae. Besides, they're the reason "Red Red Wine" is heard in every restaurant and bar in the known universe now(hint: not the Neil Diamond version).
Three words: Television, Marquee Moon.
The Human League weren't exactly the 'revolutionary force' in early electronica as they're made out to be.
I've always found Suede a little too namby-pamby musically in comparison to contemporaries like James. Once the guitarist left they were already fairly laughable and one of the best-forgotten footnotes of Britpop. The Charlatans UK were much better also-rans.

Rolling Stones. Saw them live at the globe in Stockholm a couple of years ago. Ok some songs are great, but have they done anything good after 1980?
David Bowie. Same as above.
U2. I only like their first album.
REM. Great band up to Green, after that I can't give them much credit.
Simple Minds. First albums are ace. After Alive and kicking.(was it called that)I lost interest in them.

well he hasn't had a good song in awhile, but his early 80's stuff is classic.
I didn't know when I started this thread that one of my fave groups (the Beatles) would come under such attack. Oh well, they are a bit overplayed and over-referenced.

So this basically means, a band that people make a big deal that isn't such a big deal after all...
I don't think there are any, it's all a matter of taste, and well, if I find a band not too bad, but many people like it, doesn't mean the band isn't good.
For instance, I don't like N'Sync or stuff like that, but is it overrated?

The entire 'blues-rock'/folk-rock/roots-rock/whatever genre. I have a suspicion that nobody really likes this crap, they just think they're supposed to like it. They listen to it by default because they don't know what else to do.
Sorry, I know this is off-topic; I don't like George Bush, some things the western world has done are heinous BUT: someone needs to bitchslap that guy. There is a *bit* of truth in *some* of his arguments, but it's what he knowingly doesn't say that makes him the most disingenuous intellectual, the wisest idiot, of the century.
His liguistics theory - discredited a long time ago
his media manipulation theory - some truth to it, but completely ignores the reality that news providers provide what people demand. Chomsky says anyone that disagrees with him has been brainwashed by the media, which is bullshit logic and he knows it.
His complete inability to give democratic capitalism credit for anything is utterly disingenuous.
Yet he's treated like a God by college students who don't know any better.
60's music in general. I really dislike it when an old geezer refuses to listen to something new or recorded after 1977 because "the 60's had the best music."
Anyone mention Pink Floyd yet?? Too artsy fartsy and We are greater than God. Darkside of the Moon and The Wall have to be the most overrated lps.
