Some common American stereotypes of Brits (and only half of them are actually true):

-- Brits have bad teeth :D -- British men are bad in bed  -- Brits are all snobs  -- Brits have a really dry humor  -- Brits are more suicidal b/c of the weather :banghead: -- Brits hate all surrounding European countries  -- Brits are fashionable :hat: -- British men are pansies :faint: -- Brits tell bad jokes  -- Brits look pasty-pale  -- Brits steal everything from Americans :nono:

Any British stereotypes of Americans?

Classic British stereotype of American soldiers during WWII: "Over sexed, over paid and over here."

:abovelol: A common British stereotype of Americans is they are dumb, particularly when it comes to stereotyping Brits:laugh: see above for evidence. We are the most brave, proud, best joke telling, wonderful lovers on Earth to my mind.We ofcourse have a proud history and heritage which Yankee doodle wishes it had,but never can for another 1000 years or more.We ar'nt called GREAT Britain the world over for nothing..Whoever heard of a the British surrendering?Face it our American cousins, the British are very special indeed, and I suspect all you would like to be yourselves, except maybe you would like to keep your own dental healthcare:nod: I can laugh aloud at the ignorance of those stereotypes but not Britishmen are PANSIES:nonono: One glance at our history blows that out of the water:nod:

Americans are also 'globally naive'.

Er, which I think just means 'ignorant', no?! :evil4:

Guys, guys, can't we all just get along......and hate on the French :evil4:

I can only imagine what some of the Brits must've thought when I posted my location as being in "the South". They must have wondered how I could possibly know how to get online and type correctly :toothless:

Stereotypes.. I already put my foot in my mounth by saying that Bernard Sumner was "british", meaning "cold and reserved"... so here you have one :D

And well, also probably a false rumour, but british women are not interested in sex at all... :D

That's the usual stereotypes you can hear, and trust me, we do have some of them here since most of the english have roots in the UK.

Now, I won't start with canadian or french stereotypes

When I was in Washington DC 15 years ago for a job, I met a man there who was an alcoholic. But he told me that the doctor told him that it was ok for him to drink wine. But not wiskey or beer.

And he drank wine alot

Isn't that strange, or is it a sterotype?

I played a lot of street hockey though!

i played a lot of street hockey growing up in buffalo. It was loads of fun getting smack in the head with a stick.

Buffalo should be an honorary candian city. Much more in common then new york city.

Americans:

  • All Americans are psycho-Christians (I'm an apatheist!)

  • All Americans watch American football

  • Americans don't travel anywhere outside of their own borders

  • Americans eat nothing but T-bone steaks and baked potatoes (I wish)

  • Americans only listen to American music

English:

  • British 'cuisine' is hideous

  • All British like to beat up on the Irish and the Scots (actually, this might be true)

  • British have less rhythm than Americans (Massive Attack)

  • British women are partially-shaved sasquatches

  • British wear monocles

One thing i've found interesting while travelling is comparing which minority each industrialized First Worlder has a unsavory-labor symbiotic relationship with: U.S.: Mexicans, Latinos UK: Pakistani, Indians Germany: Poles, East Germans, Japan: Thai, Filipino, misc. Malays.

That's because they are told so Christy...!

Sure, there is usually no place like home, and I don't feel I'd adapt easily anywhere else, but it's common sense to think you live in the best country on earth when you live in any country of the G7 (don't count Russia there!)... not sure about people from outside those countries though, let's ask them ;)

I know I love my country, but I could easily trade our winters to another country :p and we're the most taxed people in North America!

On the other hand, I don't have access to medical or dental care.

And because I'm out of student loan money (yeah, in the "greatest country on earth," you have to borrow money to go to uni), and can't find a job in this b.s. Republican "jobless recovery," I have SERIOUS doubts about being able to have a home long enough to write the one paper I need to finish to get my degree.

While only about 10% of the American population is gay, the British population has more than double that (22.5%).

Perhaps its in their water...

Hey, can an American please tell me if you know that Brits and Australians spell some words differently? We are very aware of the US spelling for things, because we have to be (eg default spellchecker is US English etc), but you guys don't, so I wondered if it's something you ever notice...

American: color English: colour

US: glamor UK: glamour (although many americans spell it with a 'u')

US; flavor UK: flavour

what's even more confusing are the different words:

US: french fries UK: chips

US: chips UK: crisps

US: hood (of car) UK: bonnet

US: truck UK: lorry

US: trunk (of car) UK: boot

and on and on and on....

ALSO: when i lived in the UK, one of the first things i noticed was that speakers of the queen's english don't use the collective singular. for example:

US: the government IS passing a new bill today. UK: the government ARE passing a new bill today.

there are many other grammatical differences, as well. when i was writing my masters' thesis (in the UK) i had a terrible time with that damn grammar check on microsoft word. by the time i came back to the US i had the same problem--going the other direction!

pommes frites, oui?

'french' is actually a verb, having to do with how the potatoes are cut--in thin strips.

nah, i agree your home is the best place to be, even here. sure a number of things could be a LOT better to be 100% happy but it´s the people that makes it difefrent. i´m sure in Switzerland people don´t suffer from things we suffer here and everything´s clean and ordered. but i just can´t picture me living there. as i was born in a chaotic enviroment i need some chaos to be comfortable enough. like a drug!

a good thing to be said. because everyone on earth knowns that fries - frites, come from BELGIUM. So, it has nothing to do with us, the ugly French... althought I used to think that we stole them from the Belgians in order to be more popular in the world... part of one of our stereotypes, erm...

But we HAD A GOOD LAUGH here when Americans changed french-fries to freedom-fries...

A last word...

I visited once an English friend of mine who used to live in America. We were talking about the difference between the American accent and the British one, when he told me : what if the process of history had been upside-down ? Americans would speak French like Canadians and Québécois would speak like Brits...

Lol. It's always the Canadians who waffle on about being in the G7! They're probably the most insignificant player there. There are countries outside the G7 with far more economic clout than the Canadians. And it's hardly a measure of quality of life.

Let's face it. As amusing as they are, almost all national stereotypes are crap. Americans say British men are pansies. I defy any of you to go say that to the terraces at a Milwall game. British say Americans are NFL-loving, burger-chomping uncultured rednecks. Tell that to Patrick.

The sad thing is, as communication technologies continue to open the world up, we're becoming more and more alike each day.

Now let me go and clear the 'roos out of my back yard.

It has to be said that UK's chips have very little in common with the genuine fries (frites) as you can find them in Belgium. Come to Brussels and buy some frites with mayonnaise (and certainly not mostard!) at la Friterie du Miroir on the Place Reine Astrid (aka Place du Miroir) in Jette. You'll understand what I mean.
