well, considering they're missing several hundred of them, i don't think they walked off on their own! actually, the IAEA believes they were sold to small insurgent groups.
the united states, by the way, is missing four.
don't forget how bush backed away from nuclear arms talks with kim jong-il. clinton had north korea's trust by the end of his administration, then bush gives them the cold shoulder, calling them part of the axis of evil, and voila! nuclear weapons firing into the sea of japan!
Backing the allies in WW2. It would have been a lot easier taking over the world with just one or two other dictators to deal with.
Spending any US money investing in foreign countries. Europe does an outstanding job investing in third world countries just look at the Barbary coast, China and Japan.
Allowing American culture to be exported. The rest of the world did just fine without jazz, rock, movies and junk food.
I have been to America twice and have a family holiday there in August ( Florida & LA ). Anyone know of anywhere that sells decent food , oh and beer ( Stella if poss ).
They have Stella at ABC Liquors now. Not a fan of that stuff so I bought some MacEwens.
Florida is chain restaurant heaven so you'll find all of the exported chain every where. I always recommend for Uk folks to find a good local bar-b-que place. In Orlando we have a place called Bubbalou's Bodacious BBQ that is redneck fun. Some good sushi places and some decent Thai places as well. Not the same kind of curries as over there though. Seafood is usually best along the coasts. Lot's of good and expensive steak restaurants as well. It all depends on where in Florida you are going to be.

if you're coming to orlando, we have a british pub where the UK holidaymakers hang out and watch footie, etc., on international drive. i'm sure they sell stella and other fine european fare! in many cities you can find liquor stores (ABC, as mentioned above) that sell decent lager.
oh, and if you're in orlando we have a british supermarket across from universal studios (just down the road from my apartment), at the corner of vineland road and kirkman, behind the gas station in a little shopping plaza. :D

What insurgent groups? I beg your pardon, but IF somebody would really get hold of a nucelar weapon, this person or country wouldn't be silent - because nuclear weapon is mostly a weapon of terror, not action. Plus those "insurgent groups" ( ), if they're crazy enough (and they're almost always are :) ) would have used it already, since fanatics never care. So I have doubts about. I've read about Britain missing a certain amount of enriched uranium recently... but are all those reports true? If I were in charge of defense department, I'd never let this kind of information leak out. I reckon it's all speculations.

definitely not speculation, and it's no secret either--we discussed this at length in my nuclear policy class in grad school and it was really quite interesting.
after the fall of the soviet union, russia gained control of all soviet nuclear weapons. unfortunately, because of budget crises, russia has been unable to dismantle the weapons or store them safely (hence the problems with rusting nuclear subs in murmansk). anyway, each country that possesses nuclear weapons and is a party to the NPT is required to maintain a log of how many nuclear weapons they possess, where they are, etc. when the IAEA inspected russian nuclear facilities in the mid-90s they discovered that the amount on record and the amount accounted for were off by several hundred. most nuclear policy analysts and russian policy experts believe that the missing warheads were sold by corrupt former soviet officials to insurgent groups in central asia and the middle east, perhaps also to iran and north korea. you state that they would have used them by now...one problem: it's fine and dandy to have a nuclear weapon, but if you don't have a missile launching system, the weapon is virtually useless. the weapons are most likely being used to harvest the uranium-238 and 235 and plutonium and this cannot be done without proper protection, which costs money. haven't you ever wondered how north korea and iran got nuclear weapons, or why governments have recently been worried about terrorists using 'dirty bombs'? these countries and groups most likely didn't produce radioactive material from african-imported yellowcake!
