Four year old hugs kitten to death

The Feline Replacement Program for my home gave us a nice all black kitten. Fairly decent sized, well behaved, litter trained. Would have made a nice cat. Unfortunately, my 4 year old daughter like to carry it around and treat it much like our 120 lb Great Pyrenese. Despite our best non-violent efforts to correct her behavior she brought the kitten to my bedroom. It made two cries and then laid almost lifeless on the bed. Within 2 hours it had expired.

So the issue is do we scar the kid for life to make her handle cats with care or get a big ass mean cat that defend itself? This kitten should have been able to fight back but I guess it was not in its nature. Maybe a bodyguard?

that's horrible. you should definitely teach your daughter to be more gentle around small animals, not give up and get a larger cat! we got our first kitten when i was two and immediately my parents explained to me and showed me how it was to be handled--remember, ultimately you, as the adult, are responsible for the animal's health and well-being in the eyes of the law!

she won't be scarred for life if you show her how to handle kittens properly, but she will be scarred if you treat this like she's now incapable of being around kittens ever again.

Beat up your daughter, and get a new cat. Tell her not to carry the cat around.

I would say teaching her to be more careful is the way, man. Don't make her feel awful, but say something about "being more gentle". That, or send her to "Scared Straight" where she can get yelled at by convicts in prison for life with no possibility of parole.

Get a panther.

I have a cat who lets out vicious sounds when she is picked up. Her name is maybaline, sometimes she is referred to as mabelbot because of her robotic movements. In fact, sometimes i replace the word "man/machine"by kraftwerk with maybaline. It really fits.

Serious: I didn't really get why the cat died... No cat dies from being carried around. At last none of ours..
