I went to a taping of Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Peter Jennings was the guest. Such a nice guy and very articulate. Very warm and funny. :(

a shock to see this today in the newspaper(!) but i guess that shows how often i watch ABC for my news. didn't even know he'd been off the air for months. hmmm...

as someone who studied about and is interested in the middle east and terrorism, what impressed me about peter jennings was that he was the first person to open up an american TV news bureau in the region.

as a result, while he was covering the events at the munich olympics in 1972 he was the only person-- journalist, expert, or otherwise--to recognize immediately that the perpetrators were members of black september. his producers had to ask him who black september was. smart guy.

The shocking thing about Jennings to me was how youthful he always looked compared to Rather and Brokaw, and yet I think he was the eldest of the "Big Three" broadcast newsmen. More than just a puffed-up hairpiece spitting out figures and statistics. He will be missed in this more partisan and unpolished era.

I have rarely watched the evening broadcast news. Local tv news yes, ABC, CBS, NBC extremely rare.

My bad, I just checked on IMDB and Rather is the oldest (1931 to Jennings' 1938).

I think that people many years from now might see this as the time when real journalism got overrun by tabloid and "extreme political" hack jobbery. It's a sad day for journalism when someone with Jennings' character is gone from the world beat, bringing us the news we didn't get to hear before.

Yes indeed. A sad loss.

Many a drunken night has ended with watching world news tonight. Cant remember much about it, but i do know he was a much better broadcaster than most our 'news' readers.
