Despite the fact that its entirely north sea - UK, Holland and Norway - oil thats used for the fuel here, and that 60% of Ireland's consumption is refined on the island in Whitegate, I can't wait to see how high Gougeol, err, Maxol, have gone today.

Dont worry: any poor citizens of the United States can get cheap fuel (or "gas" if you like) thanks to Victor Hugo Chavez and his new scheme to help the poor in that most unequal of societies.
It is a very generous offer, espically considering the shameful history of the US state in Central and South America. Like any price hike, this will affect the poor first and hardest. Nice of the Chavistas to redistribute - even if it is a drop in the ocean.
The price here (Finger Lakes region of NYS) rose sharply...from $2.61/gal., to $2.73, to $2.97/$3.09 (the SAME DAY), and now averages $2.97 to $3.19 a gallon.

Where I live, the price of petrol is predicted to reach 1.40-1.50€/l by the weekend . :dead:

i'm watching the local news now. there's no more gas left in the county because of the panic, and twelve florida school districts have run out of gas for their school buses. our school district, orange county, has enough to last until the end of next week, apparently; but students have to make their own way to sports games and other afterschool activities.
i have about a quarter of a tank left. good thing i'm not planning on going anywhere for labor day weekend.
I don't care about the price of gas, it can go higher.
Maybe that will stop people from buying stupid oversized SUV...
I ride my bike to work (wich is about 15km from home)and the car stays home.

3.19$/Gallon is only 84 cents per litre, with the canadian conversion, I just hope you realize it's still HALF of what people in Europe for their gaz. And 40 cents lower than Canada.

Ditto.
People want cheap gas to fuel their over-sized gas-guzzling SUVs, and then are surprised when the environmental consequences of that catch up to them.

Worst part is... it's EXPENSIVE for them, it used to be a lot less than that.
In the borough of brooklyn, ive seen a range of $3.00-$3.50. This has caused lines for gas, the first ive seen in my lifetime.
btw,Nico: What is the currency rate between our countries? I remember when it was around 1.50usd/1.00 cd. Those days are long gone and i know it has lowered considerbly.
I'm gonna have to fill up tomorrow and pay over $1.00/litre for the first time. It's around $1.23/litre in Toronto. I filled up last Saturday at $0.94/litre.
This is gonna hurt. Thank god I drive a Honda.

In 1973, OPEC launched an oil embargo. Gasoline went from 30 cents/gallon to $1.20/gallon; you'd probably like to be paying those prices now, right?
Think again. In 1974, $1.20/gallon was the equavialent of $4.99/gallon in 2005 dollars. The old price, .30/gallon, is equivalent to $1.32 today. So while gas was relatively cheaper pre-embargo, during the embargo, it was relatively more expensive than it is today.
As of late, been hearing similar quotes about relative gas prices for the early 80s as well, but I'm too lazy now to find a link for that. 
I don't drive, so I don't pay much attention to prices. What was gas going for before the recent rise in prices?
It just went up another 15c here to $1.40.
BTW the rise in the price of petrol doesn't affect me. I always put $20 worth in. Ok ok old joke.

here it was around $2.30/gal, if i remember correctly, although it did get as high as $2.40 for a while. now it's $3.00.

That's .52/gallon in 1973 dollars. Higher than 1973 gas prices, but waaayyy lower than 1974 gas prices.

as they didn't sell big mac meals in 1974 we'll never know what their actual cost was, so we can't use the inflation calculator. however, i'd imagine they would have cost less than $1.20. 99 cents, perhaps? and in 1925--much, much less than 46 cents, i'm sure.

Not sure how much the Big Mac is discounted with a Meal. Maybe the price of the burger remains steady, and the fries and drink are discounted?
