went to see him do a stand up/tell stories about Bullseye and the rest of his career at the Edinburgh festival yesterday.He is a true genius of comedy he held the audience captivated for 90 mins and i have to say it was one of the best nights i've had in a long long time.
He's also a racist. Years before the "nig nog" incident, all I can remember him doing is telling Irish jokes
A few words for the kind of idiot who made those "Irish are poor/stupid/whatever" jokes in the 1980's - hah fucking hah. Richer than the UK, higher literacy rate, higher college graduation rate. See who can have jokes made about them now.

Not a fan of any of these three; discrimination always exists in jokes, it depends on the tone though; if the artist constantly 'jokes' at minorities and has no element of self-depreciation then it tends to come across as plain nasty.
There is a line however that should never be crossed no matter what the tone; i.e. use of racist phraseology (nigger, wog, chinky, paki etc...) or making fun of things that are particularly delicate.
A good indicator is the racial mix of the crowd and the opinions / reactions of the minorities themselves...
You have to be very careful with these things as jokes can lead to bullying which can lead to violence which can lead to a minority of loonies carrying out racist attacks / murders.

Well he was a legend, now he's a racist, unless he's apologised and reformed I don't think we should deify him...
Do certain people around here never get tired of being "outraged" 24/7? It must be obvious Bowen's a harmless old codger who made the odd guffaw in a period when those 'types' of jokes were the norm. There were far worse offenders at the time (even sitcoms on the BBC) and Bowen doesn't exactly look the calculating or nasty sort. Half the time he looks like he's not sure what's happening in general.
Obviously nobody likes a racist and those types of jokes aren't appropriate anymore and rightly so but I'm pretty sure they weren't part of his Edinburgh act. I'm actually disappointed I didn't catch his festival show, I bet he had a few decent anecdotes to tell before being cast into the firey depths of hell of making a racist blunder or two back in 1982.

Just expressing an opinion; can't see any 'outrage' 
Morcambe and Wise didn't make these jokes.
Jasper Carrot didn't make these jokes.
The Two Ronnies didn't make these jokes.
Etc... So lots of people didn't make these jokes when they were 'appropriate'.
Whether you forgive / ignore a racist comedian's past is an individual choice I suppose, but I prefer the more left leaning stuff myself, which is aimed at the powerful rather than the oppressed.
I say again; racism in comedy is dangerous; racist jokes can lead to racist bullying which can lead to racist violence.

Yeah I know it was 2002 and obviously it was a highly inappropriate thing to say. I'm sure Bowen himself would admit half of the stuff he comes out with is bull(y)shit. A few jokes about the Irish "back in the day" doesn't convince me he's a hardcore racist. To be honest your original reply was as if Bowen had viciously insulted your entire family resulting in the slightly misguided "Ireland's better than the UK" diatribe. I'd probably recommend a thicker skin in this instance.
It goes without saying I myself strongly disagree with any form of racism but let's face it, just about everyone makes harmless nationality related jokes now and then, even our so called political leaders (see Jacques Chirac, what a muppet)

You seem to like Daleks though, who were also an act, and they were a right bunch of cunts.

p.p.s. I used to really enjoy Bullseye, but that's all been spoilt now after discovering his politics...

Ah, never far off an armchair musing in this forum. I think the above is as obvious as night following day. Anyway, there were examples of racial humour being accepted in the 70s and 80s with stuff like It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Till Death Us Do Part, etc. Even popular shows like Fawlty Towers had the odd line in the script which would be judged wholly unacceptable in today's rather overzealously P-C TV world. Rightly so to a degree, a bit overprotective to another. There's a reason why we don't see repeats of those first two shows on UKGold. They don't have a place in today's more enlightened/diverse culture but back then alot of that stuff was perceived as run of the mill.
Naturally it's fantastic that is no longer the case but I believe there isn't really a fine line between an innocent quip and hardcore "I don't like you because of the colour of your skin so I'm going to smash your head in" sort of thing. It's never that black and white, lots of shades of grey (that wasn't meant to be a pun but I guess it comes out that way)
i would just like to point out the fact that todays most 'loved' comedian the 'godly, can do no wrong ' peter kay made a lovely joke at the BBC about Jill Dando weeks after she was murdered but this is ok and forgotten about now.
yet Jim Bowen makes a comment about a woman and hes crucified forever, doesn't seem fair in my eyes, maybe he should put on shitloads of weight release shit like Max and Paddy and then he'll be labelled a genius?

I seem to recall that Chubby Brown got a bashing on stage after he commented on the Bradford Fottball Staduim fire... His comment was out of order to the extreme and got what he deserved, yet he still performs all over the country so it just goes to show how thick skinned the British population are. And the British population consists of all colours and nationalities and religions....SO whats all the fuss about?? Jimbo is obviously still popular and GETTING AWAY WITH IT !!
I saw jasper a few years ago and walked out half way through his set cos it was just the same material from his tv show and very predictable, which is a shame cos i love his shows on tv.

A love comedy and 'black' (not the ethnic 'black') comedy but there are lines that should not be crossed, although theres a lot of qualitative judgements that need to be made as a comedian; a good comedian can make the right judgements.
I'm English and fine with anyone taking the piss out of the English or our culture, but we are the no.4 dominant economic nation in the world, so we can take it.
You shouldn't take the piss out of oppression or the oppressed, that's my line...
One of the lines not to be crossed is using the word 'nig-nog'. He crossed it.
