I've just started building my Dylan DVD collection up. Since I was a wean all we had in the house was Dylan & The Faces.
He's gotta be the coolest guy on the planet. He comes across as arrogant cos he doesn't want to give anything away.
His voice doesnae suit everyone - but give him credit - he sings every song the way he wrote the lyrics, he can do most ranges, take Love Minus Zero for Tender, Lay Lady Lay for Heavy Soul, Subterranean Homesick Blues for RAP 
And Idiot Wind for Anger, Things Have Changed for decisive and amusing, Master Of War / God on Their Side for a poet at the top of his game, Blowin In The Wind / Only a Pawn for Protest......and so on. The greatest lyricist that's ever lived.
Cannae wait for the Scorsese film being aired here in a couple of weeks time, and I'm gonna see the man himself for the first time in November with some of the other Corby Order.
As for yer poll, kinda ironic.
Dylan doesn't like to be defined or be put in a box.....I've picked that much up with his interviews and early press conferences ;)
You can theorise all you want Shug. He's a grumpy old cunt.

I rather like Dylan a lot, almost as Shug, though there a couple of things I'm not crazy about, such as his version of I'll Keep It With Mine.
He's also done a couple of decent stabs at gospel-type, Every Grain Of Sand is amazing, as is the song on the Masked And Anonymous soundtrack, City Of Gold, performed by the Dixie Hummingbirds.
Desolation Row, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Postively Fourth Street, Series Of Dreams, Senor, I Believe In You, Not Dark Yet, etc. tons of brilliant songs, way too many to mention.
My parents used to play Dylan alot when I was a wee lad. But I prefered when Dad would play Lead Belly or Cat Stevans.

Good point, but I think you're ascribing blame to the wrong artist. Dylan always changed his style of "attack", if you will. Bands like the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, etc all seemed (to my ears at least) to stay static within a chosen style, they just got lazy after the first few albums. Plus, Dylan was never a hippie, in my estimation. I think he was pre-hippie in that he addressed topical issues through folk, but he was well into his country-rock phase at the height of the hippie movement. If you're going to paint him with that brush, at least take the time to check over and make sure you're doing him justice
I think he's a little bit of all the above, and I'm looking forward to the film as well. I bought the soundtrack (part of the "bootlegs" series that's been prevelant over the years), but haven't had a chance to listen to it much over the week. The three other albums I have of his (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde) should be in everyone's record collection in one form or another

dylan predated the hippie movement by a few years and is closer to woody guthrie and pete seeger when one considers his place in the history of american music.
do i like dylan's voice? not particularly, but it suits him just fine. and his songs are extraordinary: hurricane, all along the watchtower, like a rolling stone, subterranean homesick blues, mr. tambourine man, etc.
bob dylan influenced almost every modern-day artist, regardless of their 'genre.' as far as being arrogant, i could care less. let him be arrogant--he deserves it.
Richartd Belzer did a good Dylan impression for his stand up gig many decades ago.

watched a repeat of ARENA on one of the beebs chanells recently,which more or less covered the events and artists that grew up on highway 61 or was it 66(i forget). but dylan was one of em,the show spoke to people who knew him back in the fifties ect and by all accounts he set out to be a rock/pop/folk,or whatever kind of star he could have been even way back then. it was a very interesting show and when im not so tired or wrecked i will digress further,hic.
I kinda like how he had Joan Baez help him with his career and how he just dumped her and blew her off once his success began.

I really don't like his voice.
But somehow, he's still a legend.
