The Fall

I've just got Hex Enduction Hour, which I love, and want to go for some other albums.

Can anyone recommend some for me?

Hex is great indeed, there are a lot of Fall fans who think it's their best, it's my fave to be sure.

Others I rate:

Grotesque (After The Gramme): This one predates Hex by a year or two, it's got a couple of longish tracks that clearly define The Fall in C'n'C-S Mithering and The N.W.R.A. , plus assorted gems like New Face In Hell, Pay Your Rates, Container Drivers, etc. The recent reissue has both sides of the How I Wrote 'Elastic Man' and Totally Wired singles, making this one an excellent buy.

Slates, Slags, Etc. was next, a six song EP, that was reissued recently as well with the addtions of a Peel session and the great Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul/Fantastic Life single. There's also a reissue of Slates out there with the live album A Part Of America, which is a very good live mix, from various US cities, my all-time fave version of Totally Wired is on that one.

Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall and This Nation's Saving Grace still get played in my house, though some don't care much for Gavin Friday's guest vocals on the former album. Not sure if the 458489 A Sides and B Sides sets are still available over there, the former is a number of late 80s singles, and the latter is obviously their flips, some good tracks in the midst.

You could also check out the 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong (2 discs) to gauge other tracks over their career; on some of their 90's albums, there's been a tendency, like on Are You Are Missing Winner, to have a somewhat perfunctory cover version (in this case Bourgeois Town) next to a brilliant origninal like Crop-Dust next to a bevy of strange sounds (how else to describe Ibis-Afro Man?) IMO though, Infotainment Scan and Light User Syndrome are pretty good efforts, even if they do run a bit long in the timing department.

The Peel Sessions box is absolutely great, there are a few bum tracks in it, but I'm not sure if you wanna go out and spend a bit of money on that yet. I also really like the Austurbaejarbio (Live In Reykjavik 1983) album, as well as the Fall In A Hole Plus live set, two discs recorded in New Zealand in 81.

I don't know much about many of the latter-day compilations that clog the Fall bins, all I know is that I've got many of the tracks elsewhere, and I'm not gonna spend money on what is most likely a shoddy cash-in affair of demos and alternate takes (some of the Receiver sets is what I'm referring to)

if you like challenging great stuff like Hex you should like all the main albums from the early to mid 80s, all have stood the test of time, all have the great non-album singles on the CDs also. I'd try This Nation's Saving Grace Next for something different and extremely diverse but without peer, or Grotesque if you really want to get deep. Wonderful and Frightening World was always one of my favorites along with This Nation's Saving Grace. Bend Sinister 1986 has some of their most famous tracks but I could never get into it much

also you should check out Sonic Youth's Peel Session that was all Fall songs. it was great to hear SY covering the Fall covering the Kinks' "Victoria".

ripoff? homage... Pavement was very upfront in their love of the Fall

only ever had about 5% of falls stuff,there's that much of it.so i aint no expert but bend sinister is my fav

Bend Sinister and This Nations Saving Grace have always been my two favorites although i've probably only heard less than a quarter of The Fall's output. I've only ever seen them once but my God, they were fucking outstanding.

Where to start? Good question!

My personal favourite era is 84 thru 86, so that would Wonderful and Frightening World, This Nation's Saving Grace and Bend Sinister.

However, I also like Middle Class Revolt and Cerebral Caustic from 1994 and 1995.

Hell, get 'em all!

Perveted by language and Bend Sinister still do it for me! Recently bought Country on a click, which has the marvelous Sparta FC on it. I went to see them last friday in Rotterdam and it was quite funny to hear them play 'sparta fc' in a town with a footballclub with that name! (if memorie serves me well, hollands oldest footballclub)
