VH1 Classic

Spent a good chunk of yesterday afternoon and night watching their Best of the 70s/80s programs. I came away feeling a lot better about NO's 80s videos- The Jam and XTC had some of the worst music videos of the decade.

On the otherhand, in between pimping Paul Weller's new solo release, they aired some RHCP and Stone Roses videos. Both groups were so effortlessly cool their promotional videos could consist of standing around in the desert staring at rocks drooling and it would still probably be awesome- wait a minute..

I always thought the early eighties video bands were unfairly slagged for experimenting with a new medium when vidoes have become sterile, stylized "mini-features" with nothing more than a hint of whatever the artist's original vision is.

Then I saw the "Total Eclipse of the Heart" video...my apologies :p

What XTC videos? I can't recall seeing any for them except for the Dear God one. Gotta agree that The Jam videos were mostly crap though.

The one video that made me cringe was for Is It Love? by Gang Of Four, when they had made their lamest record to date (the grossly misnomered Hard) and paraded around in front of the camera in some awful new-wavish foppery. To hell with poverty, eh lads?

Another minor rant: the lady on that channel was talking to Gang Of Four the other day, and she was surprised when informed of the fact that the Gang's guitarist Andy Gill had produced the Chili Pepper's debut album (this was in a conversation about bands who sounded like Go4). It's been about twenty years, dear, and it wasn't exactly a secret of the state.

Never counted actually, looks like eight wooden (not plastic) crates of albums and 12" singles, at least 400 7" singles, and somewhere around 350 CD's (the last two are rough guesses). Knowing people in record stores, and smart shopping, has been a big help for me.

I think it's not right to mock early video attempts. After all, Gary Neuman's "Cars" influenced homoerotic imagery for more than twenty-five years :p

Thank God, LWTUA looks positively subtle compared to some of their contemporaries.

I still think the Beastie Boys have a lot of the best videos
