One thing I noticed when I was in Warsaw there wasn't a great deal traffic around the city.

Well, 1 day per year, they close down some roads in Stockholm.

Long distance driving I like something chill like Brian Eno's "Music For Airports" otherwise anything pretty much goes, this summer I had The Killers blaring out of my car a lot; and I had it playing really loud with the windows down. 
Of course, Get Ready - the only time I can listen to this album is when I'm driving.
But sometimes something disco/dancey... some nameless house shit. :)
I'm rather fond of driving to Underworld or Orbital, especially if I'm in a hurry.
Although my best friend and I learned a few years ago that Carol King is the best music to listen to should you ever find yourself accidentally driving through Death Valley in the middle of July.

Two For Joy by Electrelane, from their last album Axes, had me putting the pedal to the metal on the way back from Seattle earlier this year, so I suppose Jenny Ondioline from Stereolab would accomplish the same feat. What Goes On by The Velvets would as well.
There's one Elvis song that is really good for when you're driving, and it's the one where he sings about going cross-country for what seems like twenty times or so back and forth. I can't be arsed to remember the name, but it was in MIB Numero Uno if that helps (and yes, I realize that I'm committing two cardinal sins:
1.) admitting to liking an Elvis song, and 2.) admitting to have seen Men In Black
but sometimes your childish pride has to be subverted so that you can be mocked for your poor taste by millions of anonymous users the world over) :p

well, I am a kind of Kraftwerkian. I only listen to the music while driving, rarely at home where I mainly listen to the radio - hate TV, me.
Since 1993, I pick one track of the lattest cd I have bought. 18 tracks exactly, no less, no more. I record a tape every month. As I bought plenty of cds last year, I am listening track 2 of WFTSC at the moment... So the tracks I know best out of WFTSC are who's Joe ? and hey now what you doing... On November, that will be WFTSC... Then, I think I will know the last cd by heart in July 2006 !!!

99% of the music I listen to in the car is NO. I agree, Close Range is up there with the best driving songs and, corny as it sounds, 60 Miles An Hour is great too. For a change, occasionally, I'm in the same boat as || | ||| 6217|| 8 || 3; disco/dancy/nameless house shit is not bad.
Strangely, although I'm a (whisper it)Depeche Mode fan, it's not music that appeals while driving. 
If it's not NO (and it usually is), I go for -
Wlico - Summerteeth (for cruising)
Husker Du - New day rising (for thrashing it)
Orbital - Middle of nowhere (for whatever)
