thank you for your courage and strength; we will miss you. truly one of the greatest americans in our country's history.
In a time when certain people in the public arena seem to crave attention and acclaim for their acts, she was a trlu selfless person who didn't want to be famous or infamous. That her name will endure long after all the fuckers who get off on being "well-known" are forgotten is a testament to her legacy. 
Sarah Vowell had a very powerful essay in "The Partly Cloudy Patriot" about people erroneously comparing themselves to Parks. What she did required real courage. She will be missed. RIP

"one person can make a difference" seems like a cliche hyperbole .... but she did. such an asshole-ish law is utterly undefendable and unthinkable to virtually all those born in the last 50 years, a huge change for the better.
it is hard for us to imagine just how ingrained this "apartheid" was in the usa in the past. for example black american soldiers who were stationed here during WWII were amazed that aussies would treat them as equals. From their own army they were used to being discriminated against, abused, and even shot at. there was a doco on this on telly here a few days back.
Of course unfortunately racial "apartheid" still regularly occurs, its just not so open anymore. q: where are the worst schools and the least services in the usa? a: where the poorest live. which racial group racial group is overwhelmingly poor?

my parents just rented this beautiful house. nice backyard, jacuzzi, sloping, high ceilings. and it was dirt cheap. the reason--it's in a black neighbourhood and they're the only white people on the street.
there's still much work to be done in the usa. as long as uniform standards aren't guranteed by state governments in areas such as education, what hope is there for the next generation of urban poor, to escape the cycle of poverty.
as far as i understand it its the local government that funds public schools there. a poor population can not be taxed as much as a wealthier one.
