I have to admit i did question her credentials as a supreame court justice, but i have to admit she looks much better than some rabit rightwinger who bush will probably nominate next.

anyway a scalp for the conservative republicans and dems, and bush really has some egg on his face, with his personal judgements being questioned.

Bush has gone back to his conservative base and has nominated former Tool Time host Tim "The Toolman" Taylor

He's a constitutional scholar, a social conservative, and he likes to grunt power-tool noises while rendering a decision. Also, he enjoys adding more power to the bench...horsepower

it is very odd that conservatives did not like her since she would have voted however the Bush administration wanted... were they worried that she is a closet lesbian?

I wouldn't have expected this to be a story that would get any attention outside the U.S.

she actually made me nervous. I think Bush was trying to sneak one past us . He could not be so open about her conservatism becuase it would cause a huge backlash within the democratic party. Unwittingly by doing this he created a furor within the nutty religious republic wing. I think bush selected her because he was confident she would vote accordingly to his views.

She was a stealth candidate, because stealth candidiates, or moderates, are the only nominees who will not provoke a confirmation battle. Except, apparently now, amongst the nutjob religious fascists.

They're afraid of getting a nominee like David Souter, who was put forward as a stealth candidate that was assumed to be conservative, but who veered further left than expected. That way, they can present a moderate public face to enough of the electorate to prevent widespread opposition, while resting secure in the knowledge that the nominee is further right than perceived by the general public.

let's use Roe v. Wade as a litmus test: a stealth candidate would have no paper trail of any opinion ever uttered about Roe v. Wade. The stealth candidate can then utter some inocuous-sounding phrase about interpreting the constitution blah blah blah; meanwhile, the President is as sure as he can be that his nominee would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In this instance, the lunatic fringe revolted, insisting on a nominee with an established record as a conservative-- i.e., a paper trail to follow. They specifically are concerned about getting another Souter, who was a previous stealth candidate, and hasn't turned out to be as far right as Bush the first thought he was when he nominated him.

Now the lunatic fringe wants an openly lunatic nominee-- they want to pick a Senate confirmation fight with the Democrats for purposes of uniting the Republican Party. We're going to get a very ugly human being, and a very ugly Senate battle, and we'll end up with a very ugly Supreme Court.

That's what happens when half the country votes for a leader based on his manipulating their fear of terrorists.

We're in a worse situation than you Brits. Imagine that Blair decided to roll back centuries of British achievement-- everything the British people hold near and dear under attack. From now on, the only beer to be sold in the UK will be Coors Lite. The only football will be American football. Tesco will now be Walmart-- with half-wit American trailer trash working the cash registers. And all porn sites will now be bible study sites.

Now you put it like that i think even i would join the political debate here if it got like that.i could read all day about the state of America but i would only understand it if i lived there. i spent a bit of time in Israel and it was only by doing that that i began to understand the history of the conflict there.

Well, our issues are probably somewhat boring to you lot-- The pension system being gutted, American Ayatollahs being appointed to life tenure positions in the courts, reproductive freedom about to be abolished, the environment about to be scrapped. Nothing quite as exciting as replacing Stella with Coors Lite and footie with American Football, mind, but roughly comparable...

I think there will be a sudden rash of "terrorist threats" against the States (vague enough to leave no certainties which cannot be pinned down and thus exposed) in the week before the '06 election, and golly gee, folks, we just can't ensure that they won't strike while you and yours are out voting, so let's just be safe and hold off on them there elections. Alrightty?

By nominating someone clearly in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, as Bush had promised during his reelection campaign, the network of activist groups that had prepared for such a fight could ramp up their fund-raising once again, something the Miers nomination did not help them do.

There's a strong political element on this site. Who would have thought it of New Order fans. As a former Politics student myself, just goes to show we're quality though.

I can't believe Bush was going to appoint Miers though. She's wasn't even a Judge, so how on earth she's qualified to sit on the Supreme Court I'll never know. I guess Bush wants people around him who will do what he agrees with. No wonder Iraq's going so well then.
