Mix Tapes versus Mix CDs?

...and why?

I bring this up because (up until I got my computer) I used to make mix tapes all the time. But I wore out my tape player making so many mixes, and they ended up sounding sllllloooooooowwwwwwwww whenever I put them in the car tape player. Made "Stayin Alive" sound like a folk song

But now that I have a computer (and pretty much every CD I've ever bought downloaded on the music files), I can make mixes that are clear and crisp and don't have the annoying sound of me mashing the "stop" button as I go from song to song

So I realize there will be much debate, and I can't say that my experiences with mix tapes (horrible experiences, mind you) shouldn't color my outlook on the format. But overall, I prefer mix CDs for the reasons stated above

my old car only had a tape deck, but now the only place i have a tape deck is in my hifi, but it rarely if ever gets used anymore.

I used to record mix tapes alot. But then due to the same reason you stated (the taperecorder got slow) I stopped doing them for a several years!!! Then 2 years ago I bought my first CD-writing driver for my computer and I felt so much relief! :)

Just today I made a few compilations: The Kinks, Claudine Longet and Monaco. My favourite fun was to transfer vinyl onto CDs but since I parted with my turntable I don't do it anymore :(

That's how I used to do it as a kid. I seem to remember thinking it sounded fine to me. Young folks today with their interweb 3pm download thingummyjigs don't know how lucky they are.

We also had a stereo with only one working speaker so for years I thought certain Beatles songs were instrumentals.

CDs for me. I have a tapedeck both at home and in my car.

Haven't used it at home for 10 years. Dunno why I keep it.

The car one was used twice last summer. That's it.

Mix CDs

I mean I have to explain to younger friends (18-20) how tough a great mix tape could be-picking the tracks, duping them, assuring for levels. It was HOURS of work to me. Tho even if the object of ur affection was not yours, they were prolly impressed by the work on their behalf...

Now with cd burning software-a good mix "can be" a snap.

Chuck Klostermann talked about this debate in his Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs book. Essentially the one problem with mix CDs is that when you give one to someone, they can bypass the painstaking sequencing you've set up with a few clicks of the 'Next' button.

I do this , as well. I think I also just don't mind the grit on the tape deck, and somehow it all adds to the feel, to me. That and I don't feel like playing really great quality cd's on my really horrible car speakers. :D

When I was younger, I used to make mix tapes and now, I only make mix CDs. The thing that was a pain when making mix tapes was that you had to manually figure out how many songs could fit on one side. Also, flipping the tape over was a nuisance, too.

Yeah, it does make skipping over way too easy, but I like the efficancy. And if someone doesn't bother to listen to all the songs the first time around, they'll go back at some point in time and listen to the ones they missed.
