all Goth bands are over-rated.
Lets face it, the only famous goths these days are those 2 kids on Coronation St.
And they're just there for us all to laugh at.

I'm sorry, but compared to other bands like Bauhaus and The Cure, Movement is about as goth as you can come. Doubts Even Here, anyone?

But even Low-life, if you take off love vigilantes is a rather strong goth album.

Although they went a bit off the rails with their final album...
What?? The Mish. they were fuckin crap man. an embarrassment!!
KNOW YOUR GOTH!!!
I know most people hate 'em, but I thought they were great...
Sisters of Mercy is defo my 2nd fave Goth Band and I think they are under-rated... although they are a bit like the Status Quo of Goth (not a bad thing thou'; the sisters are still great)- their songs are very similar...
P.S. Apologies to Chris!

It's not the lyrics so much as the instrumentation.

I love their cover version of Neil Young's song "Like a Hurricane"!
Clan of Xymox. Not sure if they would be considered as underrated or not but I have always liked them particulary the earlier stuff like the album "Medusa"- simply classic- dark, atmospheric and moving.

One of my top three as well... 'theres calm in your eye'
Others in my top three would be 'Amelia' and 'Tower of Strength'...
I have 3 nominees: Virgin Prunes Cruelty Pageant(CAUTION:Self Pimping!:) ) And, based on the low attendance when I saw them last month, Gene Loves Jezebel(the Mike Aston version, not the Jay Aston version).
