fraking internet

spent most of the night trying to hook up the net, and getting more and more fustrated and pissed. for some reason I can't as yest run broadband and the phone at the same time. well at least I have some sort of connection. and don't ask about trying to hook up to e-mail. i need someone who knows what they're doing. hopefully this will be soon. ok computer out and phone back in.

Thanks I have a friend who will come over later, plus it seems I have a dodgy phone line, which I will have to get checked out.

looks like all the connections are in place now. it aint pretty but it works. now for the e-mail.

That reminds me of what I did yesterday - help my mother with her internet problems for 10 hours. She could get on AOL, but she couldn't see any web pages, so she called tech support at both AOL and Dell and had me talk to the "technicians" because she knows squat about computers. All the technicians, except for one, all spoke with heavy accents and I could barely understand what the fook they were saying, so most of the time, I was trying to figure that out. The last technician said she had a virus - my mother refuses to use antivirus software, so it's inevitable - and had to reinstall the system. Well, the system didn't get fully installed, the printer doesn't work, she has no AOL, and I'm about to smash her damn computer.

case closed cancel and go somewhere else....preferably someone who don't force a whole pile of insane software onto your system. Someone who don't proxy the net and edit it !! and essentially someone who will give you a real external, standalone ehternet modem. YES it's a little weird to set up for a novice.....but trust me, once it's on....no amount of cluelessness on the PC will break the connection, nor will fucking windows, and it definitely will NOT vanish for no reason never to return....if i had a fucking PENNY for every time I'd heard "it just stopped" followed (after questioning) by "errr it's a usb one I think" I would buy alcatel and burn the whole company to the ground, then work my way around anyone else who makes those horrid little cancers.

BTW it's usualluy mail.isp.com not the other way around. sometimes they use a seperate one for outgoing, smtp.isp.com or relay.isp.com Your isp should have one of those horrible automatic setup files on their website, grab it, open it IN NOTEPAD and get yer settings from there.....FFS do NOT open the bloody file by double clicking it, they'll own your browser and everything most likely (I mean the title bar will read "internet explorer 6 provided by lyingbastards.com" as opposed to "Macroshaft internet exploiter, what's wrong with your firefox and opera" like mine does). All it takes is a text editor and no more intelligence than the average lemur, assuming you know enough about PC's to know what mail is, what outhouse excuse is for and so on.

(someone once complained on a linux forum that although there seemed to be apps for everything, they all had mad names and windows users would never migrate etc etc ( I think the K in front of the kde ones just broke his brain, Kmail, tricky stuff like that)....and all anyone could say was....how the fuck is "outlook express" a clear name for an email prog,can't come up with many more because windows only ships with like 3 apps :) one of my fave comebacks ever )

my connection is much prettier now. I got a nice new filter with only one cable going to the modem now.

I wish that were possible, but she refuses to switch to a different program. She's addicted to AOL, so much that when we had 3.0 stopped working back in 2001 on her old Mac performa, she bought a new computer just to get connected to the internet. I don't mind the internet, but AOL gets very annoying often, especially when you need broadband to view most things on here.

I just spent the last three days at me Mum's. Dell and AOL. What sucks about dial up is that when I get an opportunity to visit her I have to update everything. Long and slow.

To make matters worse, Pent II with a 6 GB HD and 128 MB of ram. The machine is about7 years old. Good news is that she has two open slots for more ram (Christmas present). But the HD is almost full. It had 321 MB left when I got there. Update anti-spyware, scan, update virus scanner, scan, scan disc and defrag. Started at 4 pm finished by 1 am. I cleaned up 1 GB of disc space for her.

What I do when using her pc is start up AOL and then minimize it and us IE. Still slow but a much cleaner browser than AOL.

now i seem to have stuffed up my gmail account. i hope i can fix it, or i will need a new invite. i'll have to see what gmail send me. Lesson here don't do this sort of stuff when hungover.
