What's the big fooking deal about them?
Why does everyone on this site worship them?
I'd be interested to hear.

"It's the sonic cathedral duuuuuude!!" - Every hornrimmed record store scenester ever, on the Cocteaus
But anyways, Lorelei is good (better than the Styx version
) along with most of Treasure. One of the few 4AD groups I like. Dreampop Ground Zero.
Give a try with 'Pink Opaque' which collect some special stuffs from the early years ('82-'85) or even better the brand new ltd. 4CD digipack which contains all of their singles and ep's from the very start ('82) 'til the last drop ('96) : absolutely Brilliant. For albums i would recommend 'Treasure', 'Blue bell knoll' and 'Heaven or Las Vegas' and if you like it dark, moody and sharp you may also like their debut 'Garlands' Good ride.
Said it before; will say again: "Victorialand" (1986), the Coc's back to being Twins again; best shagging album ever.

Because, IMHO, Liz Fraser is quite posssibly the best female vocalist ever to come out of the UK ![]()
Since you like the goth music, Christopher, go with Garlands. It's a good album, but not nearly as inspired as their later stuff, of which I'd recommend Heaven or Las Vegas. But they're an acquired taste in general and not one of my favorites.

Iceblink Luck!..If you don't like the song "Iceblink Luck" you must be some sort of cloth eared Pagen Druid Gothic weirdo with roun stones for guidence
Download it and thank me Chris ![]()
And there is a Goth tribute "Iceblink Luck" cover version strangley. Not suprisingly it is a shower of shite compared to the Cocteau's masterpiece![]()

Have to agree - playing it now... ![]()
The album they did with Harold Budd ,The Moon And The Melodies is also worth checking out.It is basically another Cocteaus album with some great ambient sounds from Budd thrown into the mix.

...and if you liked that, get your grubby mitts on the recent Budd/Guthrie soundtrack to "Mysterious Skin": absolutely gorgeous. The movie ain't bad either. Especially if you're into 8-year-old boys being encouraged to fist blokes.

I ask because I want to know what draws people to them.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll give them a go.![]()
BTW, I've read some people comparing Anthony And The Johnsons to the Cocteau Twins. Is this a fair comparison?
Cant see the Antony & The Jonsons similarity myself ,no.Delays' singer sounds more like Liz ,if anyone.
treasure and head over heals are my favs.
real dream like music. and what a voice !!.i cant tell what she's singing most the time but thats better because i just make my own visions up ![]()
HEAD OVER HEELS,FOUR CALENDAR CAFE..and err..Bugger it! Get 'em all bought.FCC's got just about the 2nd best Cocteaus song ever,PUR.
1st best (for me,of all time) check out "Song To The Siren" under the guise of THIS MORTAL COIL.
If you're not moved by this song, you're already dead.
Monty - agreed - though I might have it played at the funeral. It is both haunting and uplifting. Nick Warren used to play it circa 1996 with Chicane's offshore underneath it. If ever you wanted "uplifting" that was it. 6am with the sun coming up in a field somewhere ;) just perfect.

what the fuck??
no comparison AT all. Cocteau's were awesome. Johnsons are terrible. really really crap.
21(!) years ago this very night I went to see them in Glasgow :) I then went down to London to the Sadlers Wells gigs.
Personally I'd agree with John Peel that they lost their bite around the release of Heaven or Las Vegas but from then on the material is still ok. I much prefer the Garlands to Blue Bell Knoll period meself.
I agree that Heaven Or Las Vegas is when they started to go downhill. I still like that album and the subsequent two quite a bit (particularly the much-maligned Milk & Kisses), but the earlier, the better with the Twins - for the most part, at least. Garlands is my personal favorite, although many of the BBK-era EPs are absolutely incredible.

A couple of weeks ago, I was reading an article about Antony and his favourite female singers, one of which was Liz Fraser. He said that she should be knighted, which I thought was great.
But I agree with John, I can't see any comparison.
