I've been hearing reports of Ian Brown being pelted with bottles at the Ulster Hall last night, because the sound went pear shaped, and the crowd vented their frustration on him.

Anyone hear anything similar?

I've heard nothing about that, but the poor bloke isn't having much luck with his gigs as the Newcastle show had to be stopped due to a dodgy floor!

Do you think John Squire is behind all of this???

My mate Chris has just this minute left, he was there, and said it was mental. Basically he wound them up, egged them on, then turned all wanky when he couldn;t hack it....and all hell broke lose.

And yeah, the sound did go a bit pear-shaped, but Mr Brown reacted J-Lo fashion to it.

Said it was a good gig tho :)

It's been a while since a real lynching like. chris you do more gigs than me...apart from The Fall in the empire (smith sacks band version 26), when was the last time a band got a really hard time here?

(you can tell the megadeth story, you do it better)

Megadeath: Dave Mustaine walks on stage pissed, (in the Ulster Hall, no less) shouts 'Victory To The IRA' and goes into 'Anarchy...' After the gig, they get an RUC escort to Dublin, and (allegedly) a UVF man gives him a death threat.

Last year, The Rasmus played the Limelight (same night I saw Motorhead in the Ulster Hall.) Apparently that lasted a few songs before they walked off, due to the bottling.

I know that, down south, The Darkness, Linkin Park and Lostprophets got a severe bottling of toxic bikers piss when backing up Metallica.

That's all I can think of at the minute.

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling...

their mate's just nicked your car.

The best tale I ever heard was of Bonnie Tyler getting a piss cannister RIGHT between the eyes half a song into her Glasto or Reading set (hey, all those indie kids will love bonnie, let's see if she's available...WHAT????)

All stage pretence was dropped and she emitted a shriek of "you fucking bastards" in her native accent and fled the festival.

The singer from L7 threw her tampon into a restless crowd at Reading (I think)

This gig was absolutely mad. He started off with the George Best song then played I Wanna Be Adored. Next up was Dolphines were Monkeys which took about 5 times to complete, he walked off stage a few times and bottles were hurled towards the stage. Ian did really incite the crowd at one point by saying "Is that the best you can fucking do, lets be having your fucking bottles, lets be having them" which led to the stage being left in a complete mess. He then picked out 2 culprits from the crowd who he saw chucking bottles, he made sure that security removed them from the venue which took ages. After plenty of swearing & gobbing into the crowd he played Made of Stone & FEAR. House lights came on and we thought show over now for def, just as I was about to leave he struts on stage again, swears at the crowd then leaves us with She Bangs the Drums. Performance wise it wasn't a patch on last years gig which couldn't be faulted but this one was excellent for entertainment

IAN BROWN ULSTER HALL, BELFAST

I thought you knew the price of peace over here.

The tour programme was titled ‘An Evening with Ian Brown’. Brown lounged insouciantly on the cover bedecked in smoking jacket. The image was one of cultured sophistication. The reality of our evening with Mr Brown was one of the most belligerent, confrontational and downright ugly gigs I have seen in a long time.

The evening would get off to a poignant, joyous, start as Brown took the stage to the dying strains of ‘Belfast Boy’. Cue a reworked vocal delivery of ‘Yellow Submarine’ with the pay-off: "We all live in a Georgie Best world, a Georgie Best world, a Georgie Best world".

‘I Wanna Be Adored’ sent the crowd into Proustian raptures of delight. And then things started to go fantastically wrong. Gesticulating ferociously at the sound technician Brown gainfully attempted ‘Dolphins Were Monkeys’. After 30 seconds he was yelling “stop, stop, stop”. Displeased, he proceeded to thoroughly harangue the technician. ‘Dolphins Were Monkeys’ was attempted a further two times before a furious Brown quit the stage.

As the sound tech struggled to rectify the all too apparent problems a gleeful, malicious contingent of the crowd sent up a chant of “sack that bastard”. Eventually Brown would return and ‘Dolphins Were Monkeys’ was delivered at last. However, the sound problems were to be a constant irritant throughout the performance and did little to alleviate the insidious tension permeating the Ulster Hall.

That other Mancunian stalwart, Paul Ryder, took the stage for a few tracks including a deliriously trippy ‘That Sweet Fantastic’. A bombastic ‘My Star’ and mariachi-tinged ‘Time Is My Everything’ followed, with the oft derided, yet strangely affecting, Brown vocal holding up well. However, vocal delivery would soon be the least of his concerns.

Around half way through the set Brown pointed security towards a member of the crowd who had been directing abuse at him. To the refrain of “cheerio, cheerio, cheerio” security eventually managed to extricate the punter. As he was dragged away Brown would repeatedly spit in his direction. And then things got decidedly worse. A few songs later and bottles started flying toward the stage.

There has always been a laddish element to the Ian Brown fanbase, but this was more than a case of boys being boisterous. Eventually the stage-bound projectiles could be ignored no longer. Brown stopped mid song and began to berate the cowards who had thrown bottles and coins at him and his fellow players. “Is that all you’ve got? Come on let’s have ‘em all”.

Pleading with the crowd that “if you see anyone throw a bottle, knock ‘em out for me please”, it seemed that, temporarily at least, Brown had managed to best the disruptive faction in the audience. He pushed through to the end of the set with a snarling, combative ‘F.E.A.R’. and exquisite ‘Made of Stone’. As Brown disgustedly left the stage the houselights came on. So much for the encore. As we began to make our way to the exits and as the idiots decided to bombard the stage once again there was movement at the stage door.

Dubbing himself ‘The Greatest’ and with his oddly pugilistic dancing moves Brown has often seemed as much fighter as frontman, tonight he was determined to go the distance. Standing alone on stage he asked, “has anyone got a beef? I was gonna play another three songs, but you’ve f***ed up your own evening, you love it, but you won’t do anything to stop the scumbags, I thought you knew the price of peace over here”.

The band rejoined him and launched into a defiant ‘She Bangs The Drums’. It was more than we deserved. Then the houselights were on and it really was over. What should have been en evening of homage to King Monkey had descended, amidst shamefully unsavoury scenes, into attempted regicide. Will Brown be back? Who knows, and if not who could blame him.

My Mate was one of the guilty culprits who was singled out by brown and then escorted to the front hall by the bouncers.

He felt aggreaved by the fact that he had made the effort to see IB a few time through the tour and had spent a fortune doing so. The previous weeks gig in manchester being his last. He just felt like IB didnt give a shit and was totally fucked off that he had screwed the gig in belfast after being up for the rest of the tour. There was no energy in IB's performance and the knowing belfast crowd were just responding to that.

In the end my mate had quite a civil conversation with the bouncer and explained his position. Guess what the bouncer sent him back in and said he agreed he was shit as well.... RESULT!!
