actually i'd rather not comment on what's going on in sydney.
to put it really simply. it is a clash of "cultures".
some lebanese muslim australians feel ailenated by the australian mainstream. they don't respect laws, and often roam in gangs looking for trouble, often at the beaches. this culminated a couple of weeks ago when a couple of lifesavers were beaten up by people of middle eastern appearance.
the local surfers at cronulla are very territorial as well (I know i once spent a week there). so they decided to get back at anybody who looks middle eastern, and things really got out of hand, with reprisals from both sides. no doubt a certain yobbo element on both sides, and blow ins from other suburbs, who just enjoy a fight contributed to what happened. we'll see what happens on the weekend.
that's the best i can do to explain what's going on i really don't understand how this can happen in our otherwise tolerant multculteral society.
Yes, pretty interesting und surreal for our modern Western societes. We know how France just recently got out of her intercultural impasse. Let's see how Australia will deal with it.

We're normally a fairly peaceful mob, well.. off the sports' field anyhow.
I get the feeling that while it was triggered by racial elements, more of what's happened since is a bunch of kids looking for excitement each night.
In Sydney you get some pretty violent and territorial surfer gangs, but nothing like the threats of black gang warfare in LA or orchestrated football hooliganism in the UK.

Careful, the government could harness and exploit that sort of violence as a sort of half-controlled tool of culling to use for its own agendas. Look at the Containment technique the LAPD and city hall practiced in LA's Compton and Watts boroughs during the late 80s - early 90s.

Howard (the PM) did not denounce the xenophobic statments on our former One Nation member of parliament, also 3 years ago he used the illegal migrant issue in the election campaign, by sloganeering "we decide who comes here". That sounds awfully like "we decide who comes to our beaches." This sort of behaviour can make someone a bit dim think that it is ok to be a racist.
instead of taking leadership on social issues, our PM likes to jump on the populist bandwagon. anything to stay in power so that he can ram through his econonic rationalst adgenda.

I agree that the racial issue is just and excuse to burn stuff and make a fuss cause these teenagers are all bored and want some trouble. The fire has probably been fuelled over this because of the holidays and people of diffferent religions demaning we eliminate the word 'christmas' because they are offended or something. This has royally pissed some people off, me included. If we went over there and tried to do the same to us, they would not like it, to put it simply. I just don't riot in the street and destroy stuff.

The ALP towed a very similar line during the last election.
Both parties were riding the wave of perceived public resentment towards illegal immigrants.

Back on topic for a moment - the recent 'civil unrest' has an element of media beat-up to it, disturbing though the images are, and no - it's not the sort of thing we see here in Australia usually.
