Am I the worst musician ever or what?

Keep repeating : I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. I can do it... numerous of times BUT make sure you seriously believe in what you're saying, always does the trick. You ARE what you think. Hee hee! Sorry if you don't believe in this shit, I'm just too obsessed with how the human brain functions.

This may sound weird...but even tho i aint too bad on a bass, where the right hand is rythm and the left does all the complex stuff....when I turn my hands round the the other way to play a keyboard...my left can basically do almost nothing. Can't even play 2 handed scales FFS.

Tell me can you do the patting your head and rubbing your tummy thing while talking to someone or reading...or something like that?

Anyway...all that proper musicianship is not really relevent....doubly so since NO have none of it at all.....yet make the most extraordinary music you've ever heard....all they have is music in their hearts and enough will to get it out of them.

or you could always try drums...the you have to co-ordinate all 4 limbs, AND your fingers (if you're gonna be any good )

I've been playing wind instruments in my teen years at school (clarinet, flute, etc..) had no problem with this because they only play one note at the time.

I also have problem to give a beat and sing at the same moment.. and I'd probably be worst at singing and playing at the same moment... that seems impossible to realize.

I bought a little keyboard a few weeks ago and I'm getting frustrated by the fact I seem unable to use 2 hands to play it properly... either my brain is unable to do this, or I'm seriously needing practice and concentration...

Feel free to comment, that's the idea... I need to know if I'm stupid or not ;)

I just finished an intro to music theory course this semester and I was the unmitigated worst student in the class for the same reasons you've described. For all the exams I just memorized how each song went and pretended to read the sheet music in front of me.

The best way to train your brain to let your hands do different things is to start out playing I-IV-V chord progressions with your right hand while playing the root notes with your left, changing keys every now and then.

You're not alone. My left hand is absolutley retarded when it comes to playing anything really complex. When I took up the drums, it helped a little but I still have trouble playing and singing at the same time. While I still haven't mastered playing keys by a long shot, I will say it's something that takes practice and some will even swear by proper lessons as being the only solution. Then there are those blessed with natural musical ability who never have issues with this sort of thing. Something that works for me is to relax your brain a bit while playing and just let it happen.

What most beginners on piano do is both parts are written in treble (G) clef and both hands are in octaves, so both hands are doing the same motions. Since you know how to read music, you might want to check out some beginning technique books - Czerny, Hannon - if you want to play two different parts with both hands. Eventually, after doing octave exercises, you start getting ones in which you have two simple parts, maybe a chord per bar in the left and some eighths and quarters in the right.

Lessons can be useful if you want them. Roger O'Donnell and Alan Wilder obviously both had lessons and you can tell from the keyboard solos they do - specially Roger's in "Homesick." However, Andy Fletcher has made it a long way just by using two fingers.

It's about all I CAN do :)

And even it's a pretty subjective version of "killer".

I keep blowing sunshine up the arse of that feckin aria....bt in truth, it was beaten up when I got it, that was ten years ago and I've knocked 7 shades of shite out of it for that entire period. It's a sick sick bass and I am, frankly a cruel and evil man for not just burning the bugger.

First thing I do when I'm back at work is spend too much money on a really nice bass.....or just one of those freaky Aria bodyless transducer jobs I stuck the pic up of last week. I'd be terrified of it not sounding electric enough tho.....then again...knocking out the Happy One on something that has the tone of an upright could be fun. Bollox...even as i type this the old thought keeps coming back...."spend 500 quid getting the Aria you have rebuilt into a real bass" grrrrrr until I can make my min up i will do nothing at all.

Just keep on trying! youl learn, i'm a left hander, my fingers are short,but i still manage to play a few tunes with my guitar,but some chords are hard to "reach"!I did not modify the strings.....keep on trying !
