Why do we enjoy listening to music?

I can't understand why I feel better or I feel a real joy when I hear some melodies or music that I like. Obviously it affects my brain and "joy sense" components, but why? I know it's only a sequence of sound waves with no real meaning to me. Yet I find a pleasure in listening to music. It's doesn't evoke "good" memories or makeme to want sex, it just makes me feel occupied with a pleasure.

Anyone knows the answer? :ignore:

I'm only up so this will be brief.

You can find a set of constant harmonics for happiness, sadness, whatever if you analyse enough music. It is even possible to assign these at random over other tunes and make people...as a wild example...crease themselves laughing at the death march. they even isolated a set of harmonics which induce paranoia...if this signal is mixed into an instrument on a track...the instrument is perceived as being BEHIND the listener.

Also, on a related matter, there is interaction between spoken language and music...people who speak differently hear differently, which is a LOT to do with why musical traditions grow up in one country and not another.

I don't feel like getting into this bigtime just now....but the above all comes from reputable publications.

yer into the right band then :D

Actually I was re-reading my own post there...and something occurred to me for the first time...when I read the research about the "sad harmonics", one of the things on discussion was adding them to the default waveforms on synths.....well It just occurred to my small brain.....maybe that's why it is IMPOSSIBLE to play anything happy on the Factory melotron string tapes?

Same reason I read a book, or watch something: not only for entertainment but for inspiration.

Can't live without music. It's weird how different moods will get you to listen to different stuff.I'm typing this to John Foxx's Cathedral Oceans, the most laid back album you could listen to.

Listening to music makes you calmer and more imaginative. I can visualize scenes in my head when I hear a song.

I think music inspires you, comforts you, gives you motivation to see the day through or crawl up in a ball and weep. It really depends, but I think music in that way trumps movies and literature. Not that movies or books can't do that as well, but sometimes it's more fulfilling to get some closure from a three-minute pop song than from a three-hundred-page novel.

For me, music is essential to life. It opens doors to other things. It keeps you company. And it's there for the bad times as it is for the good ones. :music:

I don't know, but its starting to worry me that I enjoy it too much, at least for someone my age. It gets so I dislike having to take the headphones off to actually talk to someone. New Order is my heroin.

New Order is my heroin.

That's so true for me. NO is trasatlantic euphoria, I couldn't stop listening to their music on my headphones.

I have to listen to my music every day or I actually get withdrawal symptoms. I start to feel down or can't concentrate properly. Hearing my favourite songs just gets the old brain cells firing!

It helps me work too, when I was doing my papers I'd keep classical or jazz on in the background to help me think. Nothing with lyrics though or I start typing what I'm hearing, and 'you've got loove technique' doesn't really fit into a dissertation :read: :evil4:

That's why I got into a lot of electronic intrumentalists like Kraftwerk,Jarre and Tangerine Dream from college.Because I used to lie in bed ,lights off, headphones on and create mini-films in my head.

Music also helps express our innermost thoughts if we don't know what to say.
