I've been trying to wean myself off ready meals and have started cooking again for the first time in ages. Been doing a lot of stir-fries with as many fresh veggies as I can get my hands on my body's going into shock from all the vitamins!

Music: Gram Parsons (his stuff with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers is ace )

Al Green (I knew of Al Green, of course, but I hadn't really heard him until this past year)

Wilco (One of their songs on a Uncut Magazine compilation led me to seek out "A Ghost Is Born")

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder's Talking Book (the two best albums I bought last year. How did I ever live without them?)

Chuck Klosterman (pop-culture critic who beat me to the punch in arguing how Say Anything screwed the majority of American males when it comes to females' heightened expectations)

All The King's Men (one of the best novels ever)

Ball Four (one of the best sports books ever)

The Office [The NBC Version] (my favorite new show)

Just under the wire: Kaiser Cheifs were really good on Jool's Holland's Hootnanny. Aim to see them this year.

The Jesus And Mary Chain My Bloody Valentine A Certain Ratio Velvet Underground [possibly] Xiu Xiu The Doors [again I think, I might've started off with The End at the beginning of 2005, then a lot of Doors at uni] Captain Beefheart Mogwai Gang Of Four The Hospitals

I have to say my favourite discovery of 2005 was the New York based band Ivy. Quite late, considering they are what like five or six albums into their career. While their sound is unique enough, they do tend to sound a bit like Saint Etienne or Stereolab. The latter mostly because Dominique Durand's French accent is quite similar to that of Laetitia Sadier's. That accent is a big part of the attraction.

IMO their most accomplished album is Long Distance from 2001. While that album is more dreamy and atmospheric, their newest album called In the Clear is remarkably Get Ready era New order sounding straight forward guitar pop. The NO influence in the production most likely comes from the fact that Steve Osborne produced it. Some people here might remember my dislike for Get Ready. I am not compltetely convinced about the production on In the Clear either - It's a bit tinny sounding, but this time Osborne managed to retain the melodies.

They also have a covers only album called Guest Room including a rather good version of the old Fat Bob song Lets' Go To Bed. Even Mike might like that one. Or then not. Videos an more info here

I've heard IVY do a soundtrack for a film which,I'll be buggered if I can remember.But as well as doing some of the incidental music,the end credits song is theirs too.Any idea of which film?

I think I know what the film was..SHALLOW HAL! And the stand out song was "I Think Of You" because it reminded me so much of The Other Two!

Ah yes, Shallow Hal, that's exactly where I discoverd them. First i thought it was some rare Saint Etienne/Cracknell song, but soon detected the French accent.

Ivy songs on soundtracks leads to two more 2005 discoveries, the TV series Kingdom Hospital and The 4400. The song Worry About You was the opening theme for the first and was played frequently in the pilot of The 4400.

Anyone else addicted to The 4400? And the kid who can tell the future is called Maia...

Yeah, I'm almost 20, so cut me some slack. Most people at my uni listen to "NME rock" or numetal. It's difficult finding people that know Joy Division or New Order let alone those two bands. :/ I love "Darklands" by JAMC and "Loveless" by MBV.

I have listened to a bit of Psychocandy, still needs a few more listens before I form an opinion, I am liking Just Like Honey, The Living End and Sowing Seeds. I have the other albums too but they also need some good listens too. :P
