Here's his real first post as a Moderator (a bit too sensible if you ask me though!)

You all had to get me out of bed on a day when I'm sick with food poisoning and I find this mess of shit all over the off-topic board. As a new moderator, I have no problem with profanity and other mischief, provided that it's in good fun. Likewise, I don't mind most useless threads, of which 90% on this board arguably qualify. To each his/her own. I don't like to lock threads and I certainly don't think that a moderator's "duty" needs to be exerted only rarely. Compared to most other online music discussion forums, members of NOOL are allowed to get away with very much and I have always valued the sort of "free speech" that any yob with a keyboard can get away with here. Some people contribute interesting banter, while others clog things up with wasted space--but everyone has the right to post whatever they like, provided it isn't completely offensive or attacking another member. However, when these sort of childish personal attacks start up and become such a divisive issue, something needs to be done. If you all can't conduct yourselves with at least a modicum of respect for each other, I have no problem with locking the responsible threads. If you have personal differences, please raise these privately via email, for the stink of your dirty laundry is not welcome to all. As far as I'm concerned, we're all a bunch of cunts (myself certainly included), but most of the time we get on quite well with one another and any ripples subside rather quickly. But this sort of factioning over matters as goddamn silly as badges, concert attendance, "Vikingdom" and other bollocks has gone on long enough now. This will not be the last time that such hissy fits occur, whether over politics and religion or tits and shopping, but let's try to keep our hormones in check, girls and boys.

A wise first speech. TBH it was being mocked for being ill I didn't care for, does tend to set one off, especially when one is sore and generally worried by said annoying affliction. Not to mention I didn't d much kip and have been straining very hard all day to keep my stomach contents where they belong. Having said that, i am a miserable bastard at the best of times.

Anyway, let's all be chums. And can we PLEASE dispell any notion of factions....I wholeheartedly expect that when I come out from the workings about my pit in the summer, to see females (and indeed uphill gardening males) wearing one of Al's excellent viking badges to proclaim their devotion alongside one of my cheap ones to proclaim their clinical insanity.

Like I said, I would hope that a pink badge would be recognized by any male here as belonging to a woman he could happily spend a hour's quality drinkin time with.

I am genuinely shocked that anyone would think there was something one-uppy about the BA's. it's just a wee laugh, and maybe people have been getting carried away, but it'll pass.

And as for grudges? Apart from liam and DoN I forgot everyone who said bad things to me today already. And will still treat them on a post by post basis.

BTW....could you not have scrubed the BA signup thread clean or something, it's gonna get lost now...anyone know anyone who wants about 50 pink badges?

A locked thread doesn't mean that you can't still read it and get the names off. I may unlock it when things simmer down over the next few days, or you're free to start another thread listing who requested a badge in the locked thead, plus asking for new requests. All I'm trying to do is eliminate the places where all this animosity raised its head in the first.

for what it's worth my comments at the start of this were more to do with your million posts per day habit you've developed of late.

And I'd like to stand by my original post. If you think you're an adult and you don't like being lumped in with a lot of people who should be acting more like adults, then just pretend my comments don't apply to you. I'll make sweeping generalizations about whoever I like, Vikings or not. If you're part of the problem, then so be it. Threads are closed, order is restored. If you wanted it moderated differently, you could've done something about it yourself, but I think I did a fair enough job of quelling things.

Fine. If you all want this forum, you can have it. I'm not out to make enemies or stronghandedly control things (which I thought I was doing in a rather tongue-in-cheek way, but I suppose the irony of handling things in an authoritarian way was lost) or anger anyone by locking threads. I still think the whole conflict was childish, hence my patronizing attitude. Of course I include myself in that childishness, but I think a lot of people (myself included) are far too touchy and can't have a laugh at themselves now and then. That especially includes those people who think they are being spoken down to. I didn't see everyone suddenly taking offence at that statement, just a few people. If I've made mistakes in my handling of silly squabbles, then I take responsibility for that. But regardless of moderator status, which means very little since I think actual moderating activities should only be exercised very rarely, I'm a regular BCD poster and I'm apt to make "sweeping generalizations" in exactly the same way that a lot of you other posters do. As a regular BCD poster and not someone who spends most of his/her time on other sections of the site, why should I not consider the quarreling of many BCD posters to be "childish" and yet stand by when other sweeping generalizations are made about various groups of New Order fans (e.g., Americans)? Apparently some people on both sides just can't take a fucking joke. I think a lot of this whole mess has been due to miscommunication and things being blown far out of proportion by a select few individuals, including myself, so there you go. Had I known ahead of time how to handle things, I would've done things differently, but what's done is done and I resign. If anyone's going to fuck off, it's me.
