we don't have Tesco here either. We do have Aldi, but they are hardly in the same class of supermarket.

Face it, Tesco is just another supermarket, probably much like the Acme a few blocks up from my street. Except Tesco doesn't sell Tasty Kakes or Canada Dry Pineapple soda.

I've never been to Genaudi's. I think it's mostly a suburban grocery store. I mostly go to the Acme in lower Roxborough. The Shop Rite in upper Roxborough used to be pretty ghetto and dirty, though I think it's been redone. The Superfresh isn't great, either, and everything there is more expensive than at the Acme. There also used to be a Saveway on the Ridge back in the early '90s, but most everything on the Ridge these days is either closed or on the verge of becoming ghetto.

Wal-mart has it purposes. Like the time I had to get a new car battery at 3 am. Or the time my hippie friends and I did last minute tent shopping at 2 am before we were to leave on Ragbrai. Bike had an article by ultra-endurance bike racer John Stamstedson who said that you could get everything you need for the Iditarod bike race at Wal-mart, not that you should, for about $9 per item. Fuck, I hate going there as much as anybody but damnit if I have to get some last minute items for a camping trip or vacation I'll kiss Chinese ass and go to Wal-mart. Unless I have a target card (JL Bean lite).

You know what is really killing retail? Internet sales.

The thing that sucks in supermarkets in most US states is the bizarre alcohol laws. We lazy Brits want one stop shopping including the key items like liquor.

I think that varies with states. In PA, no liquor is sold in supermarkets, not even wine or beer, so if you want it, you need to go to a state liquor store. But, sometimes convenience stores do sell beer. In MA, the supermarkets have a whole section for liquor and beer, but then again, in the state, no bars are allowed to be open on Sunday.

ALDI's here is the oddest store, totally different, not sure why anybody would shop there... closed half the time, they don't even try to have a wide selection of anything, they mostly have odd off brand names that seem fake... seems like some sort of cover-up facade to something insidious...

Irony is, there are not even available in Canada !

In fact, bar Ginger Ale & Tonic Water, Canada Dry has nothing else in Canada.

That's how it is in Boston - only ginger ale and tonic water. I guess because fruit sodas are kind of urban, the Canada dry bottling plant in Philly makes fruit sodas. They have more than pineapple, though. I've tried peach, black cherry wishniak, wild cherry, vanilla creme, concord grape, island lime, and strawberry. It's a shame no one else gets these sodas. The pineapple sodas I've had in Boston are crap and every other brand makes their creme sodas far too sweet with too much caramel color.

aldi sell mostly what is called no-name products packaged in their own so-called brands. their suppliers tend to be the same companies that actually make the brand name products. in germany aldi's home if a product fails the consumer society's very good standard, the supplier is changed. i am sure they have equally high standards in the rest of the world. also look out for their weekly specials rangeing fom computers, dvd player, tvs clothing etc. i myself got my dvd player, a camera, and a tv from them.
