plasma screens ruined by tv station watermarks — Forum Archive

all you out there with expensive plasma tv screens. according to a story in the daily telegraph, prolonged watching of one program without changeing channels, especially during long sporting broadcasts like cricket and tennis is likely to permanently burn a tv station logo or two or three on your tv screen. some people here are threatening legal action about these logos.

on a personal note, i hate these logos which can sometimes be quite obtrusive. i usually know what program i am watching on which station anyway. the only tiime they don't show their bloody staion ids is during the commercial break, when it might actually be useful to know what station you are on.

I take it you mean "ruined" rather than "ruing".

Local networks are now supposed to continually re-position their ID watermarks to prevent this from occurring. Pixel burn-in is one of the main drawbacks of plasma screens. Leaving static images onscreen such as pausing a DVD or game for too long will also leave their mark.

I'm with you on the CRT issue. I've got a nice large Loewe CRT screen that still produces images superior to most LCD/plasma sets. I'll probably stick with it until other screen technologies improve or until a technology like the new SED TVs enters the market.

Why do you think Ronald's switching to plasma?

You won't have burn-in issues with LCD screens. They have their own set of problems...

believe it or not, i used to be an excellent speller. it just doesn't happen when i don't feel 100%. also bear in mind it english is my second language.

FWIW, I have a small B+W TV, on which cubase will be displayed fr all time, you can see it, etched in to the screen, after WEEKS of static image.

LCD is better than plasma. You evetually may get one or other dead pixels over the years and it`s just that. The backlight can be changed if it stops working.

Surely the only difference IS the backlight....it's a flourescent tube and mirrors in an "lcd" monitor and a gas plasma discharge layer on a "plasma screen". No?

(I think it's this way cos I've used machine with gas plasma displays for YEARS (Gem S2 would be an example) and the actual info was very defo liquic crystal

No, they are not the same. Like in resolution: in a 45' TV you have 2.000.000 pixels in LCD, 780.000 in plasma and 300.000 in CRT.

Industries are aplying money in LCD technology and development. Plasma will fade away in a few years.

Not convinced... plasma is actually the hottest technology around, if you want the best, you go plasma, otherwise you go for a cheaper alternative in LCD...

Plasma is thinner, but it does have a glass, which makes it like a normal TV, you have reflections when you watch it during the day.

Cheap LCD have a hard time following the action when you watch sports and other things, and they are less tinner.

Obviously, LCD will become the low-entry system since they are used everywhere now, to replace CRT completely... but Plasma, for the moment, is the only one you can fix to a wall and it looks like a painting.. unless I didn't see similar LCD screens.

But plasma costs twice the price of LCD and currently doesn't go much above 50".

Now that I've finally decided to fork out for Foxtel I never have to watch all the crap on Ch 7, 9 and 10 ever again - up yours to all imported US sitcoms and crappy local dramas/sketch shows.

how much is foxtel these days? i bet it still is double what i pay for my broadband. i'm seriously considering it, but at the moment i just still find it to exxy,

Basic package is $50 per month, which includes most of the things I'm interested in, ie sport, music, news and docos. Movies not included. Installation costs pretty low at the moment, $10 - $30 depending on which contract you get.
