after some bad news from Nikon on his analogic material, it's just look like digital win…
what's the use for Ilford, Kodak or any others to go on producing papers or films ?
I'm teaching the old Black & White, some of my young students are just mad about it… but…
what's the use now if they can't by any material ?
Is this really something from the "past" ?

Fuck. I bought a brand new Nikon F80 4 years ago, it's still mint. What am I gonna do with it? And with my old F70?

digital cameras are doing well but they still can´t get to the analog quality. BUT (and this is an important reason) digital cameras are a lot more useful for the common people because they can handle their pics in practically any way they like. thanks to computer expansion they can even edit them, storage them and even print them as many times as they like in as many ways as they like. common people dictate the rules of market so the future ssems very digital to me but there will always exist people wanting to use film so i don´t think it will end. it will be quite a selective group though. especially if digital quality keeps improving.
the problem is always the same…
all those companies want to make profits, so when they think the gain is not big enough they're just closing the "factory"…
It is becoming more and more difficult to buy any material, even in professional shops…

my Pentax K-1000; though at a really hot shoot one summer the black "skin" came unglued and stuck to my face.
Even if digital quality did surpass analog, there's just something so romantic about the darkroom environment that's irreplacable. I can practically smell the stop bath now...

I own one, and they are very handy. Especially at gigs. I take maybe 100 pics at a gig, and maybe only use 25 of them. The rest in the bin.

Yep and the poor masses are left with 100s of jpegs on their pc with little to show for it. I travel with both a 35mm and a digi. Sure it cost me nothing but the original investment to take 1000s of photos but I either have to arse myself to the delevoper or place them on the pc to be forgotten.

When you're buying a digital camera you know it will last for a few years only… but of course you can make and erase pictures a volonté…
Does it make better pictures ? No.
It's just looking easier, but when you see how people manage with it, well…

As long as you can buy films... Ilford almost went bankrupt last year.
When I first saw the title of this post I presumed that either Kevin Cummins or Anton Corbijn had shuffled off the mortal coil and joined the choir invisible. I'm relieved that's not the case for either gent because they have done ace work for JD/NO and of course it would be tragic if Corbijn died partway thru doing "Control" and leaving it in lesser hands to be completed. Anyway, it is very sad to see the analogue element of photography disappear and the more artistic elements die with it(not to mention all the redundant analogue cameras that will hit landfills near you soon).

ahh...watching a print soaking in dektol(sp?) slowly forming an image was truly magic. The smell of fixer penetrating my nostrils under the glow of red lights and light could be the worst enemy or a friend. Such memories...

I can certainly hope film doesn't completely go the way of the dodo, because that's one expensive Leica I have sitting on a shelf that'll sorely miss getting used if so.
Prints are like records to me - they look of quality, and I wouldn't give them up for anything.
Another example of "progress" Throw out an old system in favour of a new, but in reality all you are doing is trading off one set of problems for another.
Things do not move forward, they only change. Having said that, I for one can live without my hands EVER smelling of fixer (the one we used smelled like you'd held your hands in stale onion juices) again.

Well, I'm just a little bit sad because it's looking like we won't have the choice in the future to go on with the old techniques… maybe I'm wrong, but how can I imagine a brighter future with just Canon (for how long it's gone last)… and Leica (!) still doing some analogic cameras…
as customers we only have to follow the market rules...
it is the kind of society we all live in, don't we ?
