aka australia day. 26 january. at least it is a public holiday. bugger to the politicians who some years ago decided to celebrate it on the actual day. there went the long weekend. let us amongst the patriotic hyperbola forget the original inhabitants of this wide brown land.

obviously i did not forget them by mentioning them did i. dispossessed and alienated by white society. the poorest, and percentage wise, by population origin the the largest number of prison inmates. the lowest life expectancy etc etc.

you would have thought that by now oz would have found a way to alleviate at least some of their most glaring problems. it is not as if nothing is being done. just not the right thing.

Noble sentiments, Ronkus - although I do reccommend reading "The Future Eaters" by Tim Flannery for a full history of the invasion of Aus by humans (that's all races, btw), and the impact humans have had on Australia and it's true original inhabitants, the animals and plants.

One of the problems with criticising patriotic hyperbola that is thrust down out throats every Jan 26th is the temptation to fall for a differt type of non-jingoistic hyperbole.

Personally, as far as Jan 26th goes, I just like the Public Holiday penalty rates, a nice rare roo steak on the barbie and a rousing cheer for the fellow that invented Air Conditioning.

Oh, and spare a thought for the firefighters down here in Victoria - the entire state is basically on fire.

i am a aware of tim flannery's work. whilst the aboriginals may have denuded much of australia's environment, when they first arrived here, they did learn to live with the country as it was. they still are the original owners of this land.
